The Magic of Sundance

Film buffs, indie lovers, celebs and snow bunnies all rush to Park City, Utah this weekend for the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. Among famous faces hitting the small town scene are Nick Jonas, Anna Gunn, Daniel Radcliffe and Kristen Stewart, who are each featured in films.

This year’s competition slate includes movies about abortion rights, a prominent Islamic State victim, fraternity hazing, embattled LGBT teens, the current tech investment spree and the Sandy Hook tragedy.

Festival Director John Cooper said he expects a “very active” market this year, as studios, streaming services, cable networks and other buyers try to snatch up the hottest titles. Here are a few highlights from the Sundance lineup:

The Hollars, a high-profile premiere starring John Krasinski as a graphic novelist who returns home to care for his sick mother…

Kate Plays Christine is an ingenious blend of documentary and psychological thriller depicting a true life story of 30-year-old television host attempting suicide on live TV…

Newtown, Kim A. Snyder’s searing new documentary has no words of compassion or reassurance that can bring back the 20 children and six educators who lost their lives during the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School…

The Birth of a Nation is the epic story of slave rebellion leader Nat Turner and is among the most talked-about titles at the festival; staring Nate Parker alongside Gabrielle Union and Armie Hammer…

Equity stars Anna Gunn in her first major role since playing Skyler White on AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” moves onto higher-level business practices about a female Wall Street executive handling a controversial tech IPO…

Certain Women stars Michelle Williams and Kristen Stewart in the story of intersecting lives across Wyoming…

Goat brings Nick Jonas into a new and unfamiliar light which explores a different kind of brotherhood: the world of fraternity hazing…

I’d give my left arm to hobnob in this magical mountain town of film galore.
