The 2016 Met Gala Superlatives
Posted On May 03, 2016
The Met Gala has come and gone all too soon. The only thing better than watching the Met Gala’s live red carpet is dissecting the fashion and beauty trends of the chosen ones who made it to the coveted steps. Instead of a traditional fashion recap, we are here to share what everyone was actually thinking about last night’s looks. How well did the attendees incorporate the theme, Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology?
Although we are most likely to be over metallic dresses in the future due to the overkill of them last night, here are your 2016 Met Gala superlatives.
Best Dressed: Claire Danes
There is no contest; Claire Danes won the 2016 Met Gala. Not only was her dress classic and beautiful, but it successfully captured this year’s theme. If Cinderella and the cosmos had a baby, it would be Claire Dane’s Met Gala dress. This Zac Posen original had her looking like a real life princess on the front steps of the Met, but when she got inside is when the fun really started. Her dress literally lit up! “Celestial grandeur,” the designer called it. Danes kept her look light and feminine while still being the most high-tech, and that is why she is this year’s winner! A gold star for the shining beauty!
Worst Dressed/ Most Likely to Not Know What Event She Was Going To: Selena Gomez
We aren’t really sure what happened to Selena here. We had high hopes for her Met Gala look since her award show looks have been on point this season. She wore an ankle-length white dress with metal studs, a cropped leather bustier over top, and black combat boots. So many questions. Where is the tech aspect? Why are you wearing combat boots? In general, we just want to know why she did what she did? Maybe she just got her events mixed up? She is a busy girl after all.
Most Likely to be Wearing a Tacky Version of Someone Else’s Dress: Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift is clearly going through an unexplored “edgy” phase. Her Met Gala look was all over the place. The cut outs in her dress were all wrong, and the shoes were way too much for a two-fabriced, ruffled, and patterned dress. We can give her some credit for trying, but everything Swift did wrong was done right in Brie Larson. Swift should stick to her girl next door persona and leave the edgy rebel to Madonna. On the other hand, Brie Larson looked beautiful and her facial expressions were very Machina.
Most Likely to do Drugs Before an Important Event: Madonna
Speaking of Madonna, her outfit was SO Madonna. She looked like she just came back from a Coachella/Ultra/Spiritual Retreat type rave. She wore a huge necklace looking pendant on her head, a full black lace bodysuit with sheer cut outs in the boobs and the butt, and thick black strappy thigh-highs. She also told E! that she only came for the breadsticks and left with a champagne bottle in hand. She gives no F’s, and although her outfit is terrible it’s clear that whatever spiritual retreat she was at, she practiced yoga because her booty was on point!
Most Likely to Save the World: Emma Watson
As if we didn’t already love Ms. Watson enough, she showed up the Met Gala in a dress that’s fabric was made entirely out of recycled bottles. The zippers of the dress were made from recycled materials, the bustier from organic cotton, and the lining organic silk. The gown was made by Calvin Klein x Eco Age. Environmentally friendly and beautiful. Emma took a completely different approach to the future of fashion and one that actually matters. No amount of tech-smart fashion or metallic fabrics can save the world like recycling and sustainability can.
Most Likely to Kill Trends: The Kardashians
I’m sorry, but someone has to say it, The Kardashians are putting Balmain in a coffin and lowering it into the ground. We get it you guys LOVE Balmain. They wear it to every occasion, so much so that the designs are all starting to blend together. Kim and Kylie’s outfits look almost identical to the dresses they wore to Kris’s Great Gatsby themed birthday party, the Yeezy show, and basically every other event this year. Quite frankly, we are sick of looking at it. The irony here is that the Kardashians are the biggest trendsetters of our time, and they are literally killing the trend that they love so much. They are doing themselves a disservice by wearing the same designer to every event. So please Kardashians, #StopWearingBalmain2k16
Most Likely to Try and Upstage Your Girlfriend, Unsuccessfully: Zayn Malik
Gigi Hadid’s outfit was stunning. She wore a metallic beaded bodysuit through a stained grey see-through dress. She was one of the few that didn’t do the metallic tackily. She also helped Tommy Hilfiger in the designing, which is very impressive. Then you have Zayn Malik. He is a charming little fellow, but his bionic robot arms may be a little too much. We get that your girlfriend is Gigi Hadid and it may be hard to sit back while everyone praises her, but just be a supportive boyfriend and let her have all the glory. Zayn looks good enough in a tux to be the perfect accessory on Gigi’s arm.
Most Likely to Wear the Girl Your Husband Cheated on You With’s Skin to an Event: Beyoncé
We were all patiently waiting to see what Beyoncé would show up in and who she would show up with. We were a little disappointed with Beyoncé’s dress, until we realized it was Becky with the good hair’s skin that she was wearing. She didn’t show up with Jay Z and didn’t wear her wedding ring. Her makeup was also very questionable with only one eyebrow done and a raccoon-like smokey eye. I mean one can’t be perfect all the time.
Most Likely to Hex You- Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman channeled her Practical Magical character at this year’s Met Gala. She looked perfectly witchy in her Alexander McQueen dress. The black, the cape, and the moons all say don’t mess with me or I will curse you for eons.
Cutest Couple: Zoe Saldana and Marco Perego
The Met Gala is known for their couple factor. Last year Bey and Jay and Kim and Kanye owned the grand couple entrance. This year it was actress Zoe Saldana and her beau Marco Perego. Zoe’s Dolce and Gabbana dress was definitely the most dramatic dress of the night as was her little make-out session with hubby Marco. The two couldn’t keep their hands off of each other, but who could blame them. Did you see his low man bun? This is quite possibly the chic older brother of the standard man bun. Take notes man buns of the world.
That’s all folks! Rest in Peace metallic, Balmain, and Becky!
