According to a 2009 study “When Intentions Go Public,” divulging your new year’s resolution takes you one step closer to failing. We realize that sounds slightly doom and gloomy (don’t fret if you already told!) but the facts are undeniable: Those who share their grand plan to lose weight, for example, feel an artificial sense of accomplishment after telling friends and family. This “premature sense of possessing the aspired-to identity” is what weakens our motivation to actually succeed. Kurt Lewin, founder of social psychology called the process “substitution.” So what should you do to make sure you lose those extra pounds this year? According to Derek Sivers from TED Talks, “..You can state it in a way that gives you no satisfaction, such as, ‘I really want to run this marathon, so I need to train five times a week and kick my ass if I don’t, okay?’”
