Q & A with Alli Webb

no cuts. no color.

Alli Webb the successful founder of blow out sensation Drybar keeps things natural and feminine.

Just a really good blow dry, for $35. Such is the secret to Alli Webb’s incredibly successful Drybar— plus Champagne, candy, and chick flicks. In less than three years, Webb has opened 26 US locations and launched a fantastic Drybar product line, giving life to a paradise for on-the-go women— including Julia Roberts and Renée Zellweger.

Alli, how did Drybar come to be?
I had gone to beauty school and worked for John Sahag in New York, then took time off to be a stay-at-home mom to my two kids. After five years, I missed talking to adults and being in the work force. I posted on one of the mommy blogs that I would come to your house and do blow outs for $35. I got absolutely flooded with responses and couldn’t handle how busy I suddenly was. That’s when the light bulb went off. There needed to be a place where these women could go. From the moment we opened up shop, it all just went nuts. Now here we are—twenty-six stores later.

Have you always been hair-obsessed?
I have struggled with my hair, which is naturally curly and frizzy, for my whole life. My mother used to blow it out when I was six or seven, and that was when the obsession started. When your hair looks good, you feel good. It’s as if there’s a whole new pep in your step.

We love the fun, feminine vibe you have created in the salons.
It was really important to me that a blow out could be accessible to all women, and I wanted it to feel like a fun experience, with blow outs named after cocktails like Mai Tais and Cosmos and chick flicks playing.

Your new Drybar products at Sephora and in your salons incorporate natural ingredients. How important is that?
It’s entirely unnecessary to have all of those chemicals and parabens and sulfates. We try to include a lot of interesting roots and antioxidants, such as artichoke extract, lychee, hibiscus, and ginseng.

Any secret hair tricks we should know?
Be sure to brush out your hair at night, one hundred times, from root to end. It gets out those oils that can accumulate in the root area, stimulates your scalp, and helps with your hair health. I’ve also been on a strict regimen of biotin, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, and prenatals that really make my hair grow faster.
