Deleting Emotional Baggage

Whether it is the loss of a loved one, a divorce, or other personal tragedy, we all experience various forms of heightened anxiety in our lives. How we choose to manage these emotions depends on varied factors but more often than not, we find ourselves just burying them. This is not a good thing if you speak to any physician. Trapped emotions lead to stress, which in turn can lead to deteriorating health.

Harvard Medical School, in a recent study, discovered that there is a link between emotional stress and heart disease. Deep inside the brain, there is a small, almond-shaped area called the amygdala, involved in processing intense emotions such as anxiety, fear, and stress. Now, a new brain-imaging study shows how increased activity in the amygdala may trigger a series of events throughout the body that raises heart attack risk. “This study identifies a mechanism that links stress, artery inflammation, and subsequent risk of heart attack,” says study leader Dr. Ahmed Tawakol, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Have we not been saying all along that stress can kill you?

In his book, The Emotion Code, renowned holistic physician and Lecturer, Dr. Bradley Nelson, lays bare the inner workings of the subconscious mind and how they affect our health. According to him, “trapped emotions” are emotional energies that can literally inhabit your body. Dr. Nelson spent more than 20 years studying, healing, and teaching how emotions from negative live experiences lead people to react to stress in ways that are harmful to their health, relationship and wellbeing. Here, he explains how The Emotion Code method can help eliminate that emotional baggage.

What is so unique about The Emotion Code?

The interesting thing about The Emotion Code is that it’s not a type of therapy. It’s just a simple method of tuning into the subconscious mind and asking very discrete questions about what’s going on with the body and the subconscious mind knows. It remembers everything you’ve ever done, every face you’ve ever seen in a crowd, the subconscious mind is a holographic, archiving computer and it knows that you have emotional baggage. What’s fascinating is that sometimes our lives are being derailed to some degree by emotional baggage that we inherited from our ancestors. It’s just energies that are passed down, you can’t see them, they’re totally invisible, but you can find them with the Emotion Code and release them. It’s a simple but incredibly powerful process.

What do you do during the process?

It’s important to understand that the conscious mind really doesn’t know much. If you have self-sabotage going on, for example, if you can’t seem to find your soul mate, if you’ve been diagnosed with some kind of a disease process, consciously you don’t know why that’s happening but the subconscious mind knows exactly why you are manifesting those things in your life. We teach a number of different methods. Muscle testing, is just a form of bio feedback. So you simply ask questions like ‘Do I have a trapped emotion that needs to be released?’ Then a muscle test can be performed – we teach you how to do this to yourself or on other people. If the answer is yes, we have a chart of emotions. There are 60 emotions in the chart and then you simply look at the chart and ask, ‘Well what emotion is this?’ The subconscious mind will answer you through this medium of your physical body – it’ll be a little stronger for yes and a little weaker for no and very quickly you can narrow it down out of the list of 60 emotions. You can find a specific emotion that is trapped in the body, usually within less than a minute and then the next question you would ask would be ‘Do you need to know more about this?’ If the subconscious mind wants to dig a little deeper, you can then ask when this occurred and so on… at a certain point, you can release the emotion. What we do to release the emotion is a similar process to like when you take your credit card out of your wallet with a magnetic strip on the back and you wave a magnet over that magnetic strip – you can erase all your data, it’s basically the same kind of thing. You can put that magnet over your forehead and to the back of your neck just a few times and that releases that stored energy imprint in your body. It’s amazing how powerful this can be. One of the greatest proofs of this is that it also works incredibly well with animals. There’s no placebo affect with animals but they are also emotional beings just like people, they get trapped emotions.

What if a person does not realize he/she has emotional baggage?

We usually don’t recognize when we have emotional baggage. There was a man who came to see me once who had terrible low back pain. It was a 9 on a 0 – 10 scale and what I found was that he had a trapped emotion of anger that was causing his back pain. I worked on him and instantly his pain went from a 9 to a 0, it was completely gone. It was miraculous for him. I was thrilled that it worked so well but a couple of days later he came to see me. He said ‘you know Dr. Nelson, you released that emotion of anger from me and my back has been fine. I still can’t believe it but there was something else going with me that I didn’t tell you about. For as long as I can remember, I have had this anger issue. I’ve been to anger management several times and that didn’t really help, I’m always yelling at my wife and kids, I have to watch the road rage, I just thought that that’s how I was but when you released that anger, since then I feel kind of at peace, I don’t feel that anymore. How did that work? At the time, many years ago, I really didn’t know. But what we believe now is that when you have a trapped emotion of anger or a trapped emotion of depression or whatever emotion that might be, a situation arises when you might tend to feel that emotion, you will feel it much more easily than you otherwise would because literally part of your body is already feeling that emotion. Every emotion, we believe, has its own specific frequency and its own specific vibration. So anger is a different frequency, a different vibration than sadness – they’re all different. So releasing these can change everything about your life. It can not only change how you feel physically but it can also change how you feel emotionally and how you deal with problems and it can really set you free. What’s driving the phenomenal success of this throughout the world is that people can do it themselves and they find out, that this actually does work.

Can stress literally kill you?

Yes, it can. In fact, the Japanese first discovered this, predominantly in women over 50, when they have some kind of a huge emotional event like if their husband asks for divorce or somebody dies, oftentimes what will happen is that the woman will die. In fact, Doug Flutie, the famous football player from the east, you may remember that his father died of a heart attack and he was in the hospital room with his mother and about an hour later his mother bent over to give him a kiss on the forehead and she collapsed from heart failure. The belief was that she also died of a broken heart so it definitely does happen. No question about it.

What are some of the techniques you practice when you are hit with stressful situations?

One of the most important things for us to realize as human beings is that we choose our emotions. No matter what the circumstance may be, most people tend to believe, that they are at the mercy of whatever emotions come up and there’s nothing they can do about it and nothing could be further from the truth. It’s important to realize that sometimes people do things that you don’t like, sometimes things happen that you don’t like or that you don’t want but if there’s really nothing you can do about it, it’s important to recognize that and to allow yourself to be at peace with what’s happened even if it’s something that you’re really not ok with. If you resist against that thing and there’s nothing you can do to change it, then what ends up happening is that you start producing all of these negative emotions – resentment, anger, frustration – and those things eventually lead to worse things. Instead, you can choose a positive emotion, even when something negative is happening. So that’s number 1, number 2 is to realize that if you have emotional baggage in your body, what we called ‘trapped emotion’ in your body, then you’re going to be more likely to experience that emotion if some similar situation arises because literally part of your body is feeling that emotional frequency, that vibration all the time.

In order to try and live a less stressful more peaceful existence, what role do supplements and diet play here?

You need to try to eat carefully. For example, if you go out to eat some place for lunch or dinner, eat the salad first so you can fill yourself up with something that’s actually alive and then later eat the things that aren’t as good for you so you might not eat as much. Another thing that’s a good idea is if you’re going out to eat with friends, come prepared to talk, bring some stories with you, so that you’ll be talking more and eating less. Another thing to do is when you’re thinking of having another helping, wait. Wait for 5 minutes and chances are that you won’t want it anymore and you’ll be full. There’s a delay in that full sensation.

And supplements?

One of the amazing things of the subconscious mind is that it can tell you what supplements you actually need. We have a self-study course that’s called The Body Code. Does our skin get affected by stress?

Yes, absolutely it affects the whole entire body. When you’re under stress, your body produces stress hormones that elevate your blood sugar levels, elevate your blood fat levels, your immune system becomes suppressed, and the problem is that most of us are living in stressful ways all the time so it becomes a challenge to be at peace.

A smile works sometimes, too, right?

Absolutely right! My father had a saying, ‘Life can be wonderful if you don’t get in too much of a hurry.’ I think that was a really wise thing. Are you feeling joy and happiness in your day to day? If you’re living too much in the future, you’re spending too much time thinking about things that are still coming; you tend to have fear-based emotions. If you’re living too much in the past, you tend to have more regret-based emotions. If you’re living in the present, you tend to have more joy, feel more happiness, more curiosity. It’s important to be present and not living either in the past or in the future too much because it robs you of your presence. One of the most fascinating things we have picked up over the years is that if you tend to live too much in the past or in the future, when you detect the hidden, invisible emotional baggage that is going on in your body, it becomes much easier to live in the present because you don’t have those vibrations pulling you to the future or dragging you back in to the past. If you really want to have peace in your life, you eventually find out that you can’t have it unless you forgive those who have wronged you in life. This can even be your own self if there are things you’ve done wrong. If you can’t forgive someone who has wronged you or yourself, you’re not going to have peace. We hold forgiveness, it’s kind of a natural reflex if someone’s really hurt you, and we hold forgiveness because you want to hurt them. There’s a famous quote, ‘Not forgiving someone is kind of like drinking poison and expecting them to die.’
