Make Your Own Body Oil

Using body oil is a fabulous after-shower treat to keep your skin moist and smooth. Just like any bath product, body oil can be pricey. You need only three ingredients to make your own, so why not? Natural beauty products are better for you and the earth. You will need:

  •  Grape-seed or sunflower oil
  •  Fragrant essential oil of your choice
  •  A small bottle

You can get essential oil at your local holistic or metaphysical shop, and you might be able to find it at a health food shop. Do a test to make sure you aren’t allergic to the oil before you make your batch. Fill the bottle 2?3 of the way with the grape-seed or sunflower oil. Then put in drops of the essential oil until the fragrance is strong enough for you. This will be different for everyone, so add it drop by drop. Shake the bottle well. Your body oil should stay fresh for six to twelve months. Body oil is great for people with dry skin, so make some for friends and family as well.

 

Make Your Own Sugar Body Scrub

Walk into any body-care shop and you’ll find an array of salt and sugar scrubs that cost $20–$40 for one small jar. Exfoliating your skin doesn’t have to be that expensive— and it’s not just for women either. With a few simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry, you can whip up a big batch of refreshing scrub. You will need:

  •  1 cup brown sugar
  •  1 cup white sugar
  •  Almond oil or vegetable oil
  •  Essential oil or fragrance oil (try lemon, vanilla, lavender, or rose)

Mix both the brown and white sugars in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Add the almond or vegetable oil to the sugar until it becomes a thick paste. Add a few drops of your favorite essential or fragrance oil. Make sure you aren’t allergic to any of the oils you want to use.

Jump in the shower and rub the mixture all over your body, paying close attention to typically dry areas like elbows and feet.

 

Make Your Own Facial Cream with Essential Oils

Facial creams are emulsions, or mixtures of oil and water. They also might contain essential oils, which impart a scent and treat specific skin conditions. Use one of the following, based on your skin type:

  •  Lavender for all skin types
  •  Chamomile for sensitive skin
  •  Grapefruit for oily skin
  •  Rose, also known as damask rose, rose otto, or Bulgarian rose, for all skin types, especially dry and/or sensitive

Here’s a cream you can make at home:

  •  2/3 cup distilled water
  •  1/3 cup aloe vera gel
  •  1 or 2 drops of essential oil (see options)
  •  3/4 cup apricot oil
  •  1/3 cup coconut oil or cocoa butter
  •  1/4 teaspoon lanolin
  •  1/2 to 1 ounce beeswax, grated
  1. Combine the distilled water, aloe gel, and essential oil in a glass cup or bowl, and set aside.
  2. In a double boiler over low heat, combine the apricot oil, coconut oil (or cocoa butter), lanolin, and beeswax, and heat them just enough to melt the beeswax. Remove from heat.
  3. Pour the oil mixture into a blender and allow it to cool completely. When it’s room temperature, turn the blender on to its highest speed and add the water mixture, pouring as slowly as you can, to the oils. Don’t pour the whole amount at once—watch the mixture closely, and when it looks thick and white, stop adding water. Pour the cream into glass jars. Store in a cool location.
