Simple DIY Sunburn Solution

Longer days and more hours of sunshine are upon us. While this gives you extra time to work on achieving that perfect golden tan, your odds of coming away from all the poolside lounging with a painful sunburn also increase significantly.

Overexposure to UV radiation from the sun eventually burns your skin, leaving it red and irritated. A study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that over 30 percent of adults and nearly 70 percent of children suffered from sunburn within the past year.

While you might be tempted to reach for an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication to treat the unpleasant side effects of sun-scorched skin, the chemicals found in these products may actually worsen your condition.

Since the skin is the body’s largest organ and anything applied to it can be absorbed into the bloodstream within an incredibly fast 26 seconds, Health LA Spa Director and aesthetician Brandy Velasquez says it’s vital we choose sunburn solutions without chemicals.  Below, she shared her simple DIY fix for treating sunburned skin, using all natural ingredients.

Sunburn Soothe Spray

–       1 part Apple Cider Vinegar (Target;$6)

–       2 parts Water

–       Several drops of Lavender Oil (Amazon; $10)

Combine all three ingredients in a spray bottle and apply it lightly to skin.

According to Brandy, this cooling combination works in several ways. The vinegar contains acetic acid (the main ingredient in aspirin), which relieves itch and inflammation. It also restores the skin’s natural PH balance. The calming lavender oil not only masks the vinegar smell but also helps skin heal from damaging burns, prevents scarring and acts as an antiseptic.

So, the next time you experience the ill effects of going a little too long between sunscreen applications, whip up this easy and effective concoction. You and your skin will be feeling and looking better in no time.
