Melatonin, not just for sleep

The hormone, melatonin, is a popular sleep aid heralded for its lack of side e fects. Now, researchers have found that melatonin may also help control weight gain and prevent diabetes. According to research published in The Journal of Pineal Research, melatonin increases what is known as “brown fat,”which helps regulate body weight (as opposed to “white fat” that stores fat in the body). While the quantity of melatonin required for efficacy requires additional research, you can do your own experimenting with foods such as mustard, Goji berries, almonds, sunflower seeds, cardamom, fennel, coriander, and cherries—all of which contain small amounts of melatonin.
