80s Pop Star Vanity Dies At 57

Vanity, front woman of the girl group Vanity 6 and protégé of musical genius Prince, has passed away at the age of 57. Born as Denise Katrina Matthews, Vanity spent several years battling kidney failure and more recently an abdominal illness known as sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis, which is an inflammation of the small intestine. Her sickness has been linked to her addiction and partying ways dating back to the ‘80s.

The Canadian singer died in Fremont, California on Monday evening, ironically the same day of Music’s biggest night, The Grammys. An outpour of love, support and mourning messages circulated throughout social media confirming the unfortunate news of her untimely death from fans and industry insiders worldwide.

Recording artist, MC Hammer tweeted to his nearly four million followers:

“Today my friend & Sister Denise Katrina Matthews p/k/a ?#Vanity passed away. She absolutely loved GOD unto salvation. Rest in his Glory”

And legendary percussionist Sheila E. also tweeted:

“SADDEN my FRIEND IN CHRIST gone 2day. Vanity, Denise Matthews. MISS YOU DEARLY. U ARE IN HIS ARMS NOW, NO Pain”

The former popstar began her career as a teen model and soon after was discovered by the legendary Prince. Her encounter with the songwriter led to stardom as the frontrunner for the all-girl group alongside Susan Moonsie and Brenda Bennett. The band’s rise to fame quickly catapulted after the release of “Nasty Girl.”

Matthews would eventually lend her talents to the realm of acting in multiple movies including, “The Last Dragon” and “Action Jackson”. After leaving Hollywood, she became a born-again Christian and just 48 hours before her passing during a church service, the 57-year-old informed the congregation that she was, “ready to go home.”

Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Vanity during this sad and difficult time.
