Carrie Fisher Asked to Drop 35 LBS for The Force Awakens

‘They didn’t hire me, they hired me minus 35 pounds,” Carrie Fisher said in a recent interview with Good Housekeeping UK. Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress spoke openly about the pressures of staying in ‘Hollywood’ shape.

59-year-old Fisher plays the role of General Leia Organa in the upcoming film – yes, former Princess Leia is now a General. In order to reprise her role, she was asked to lose more than 35 pounds.

“They don’t want to hire all of me – only about three-quarters! Nothing changes, it’s an appearance-driven thing,” she said. “I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up. They might as well say get younger, because that’s how easy it is.”

And she did it, Good Housekeeping goes on to report, she ate less and exercised more for the job. For some, this would be a victory, but not for Fisher, who said, “when I do lose the weight, I don’t like that it makes me feel good about myself. It’s not who I am.”

When Carrie Fisher auditioned for Star Wars: A New Hope, she was 19 years old. You would think things would have been different then. Think again.

Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia

Before offering Fisher her role in A New Hope, the production team told her that she had to lose 15 pounds to play Princess Leia. Is this a terrible case of deja-vu or what? Forty years later, our beloved Princess gets slighted again.

Miss Fisher’s fabulousness has no flux to us so it doesn’t really matter. Go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18th.
