#TGIT: Everything That Happened on Shondaland

Yesterday was the first official #TGIT of the new year. As usual, Shonda Rhimes, the genius that she is, kept her stellar rep of ‘OMG WTF’ moments alive. If you didn’t see last night’s episodes of the holy grail of television: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder, don’t worry we are here to fill in the gaps for you. (Spoiler Alert)

Grey’s Anatomy

ABC
ABC

Last night’s episode was directed by Oscar-winning actor, Denzel Washington and my god, he did an amazing job. But poor Meredith Grey never gets a break. Per usual, she experiences a near death experience that is absolutely harrowing. One of her patients unconsciously rises up and beats her close to death. For the first 20 minutes of the episode, we see the scene through Meredith’s eyes. We hear nothing because Meredith hears nothing. We only see the shock and pain on all our favorite character’s faces. Meredith is in the hospital for weeks, unable to walk or talk, because her jaw is broken and mouth is wired shut. And through the silence, we get to see what life is like on the other side of the hospital bed. As always, Shonda ends the episode with a lesson of some sort- last night’s was that you must always say something when you have the chance, because you may not always be able to. I will take that Shondaism with me to the grave.

Scandal

ABC
ABC

After the emotional roller coaster that was Grey’s Anatomy, we hopped on to yet another roller coaster of absolutely no chill. The last episode ended with Pope having an abortion and breaking up with Fitz. Three minutes into this episode she is straddling Jake against a wall in her apartment hallway. She sure bounces back quick. Meanwhile, the Gladiators take on a new client, Diane Peters, Head of the NSA. A bunch of top secret documents were stolen from her computer and about to be leaked to the public, uh-oh! This hack is being blamed on her boyfriend, but in typical Scandal fashion, it is never who it looks like. Olivia reaches out to Fitz to try and fix the situation and gets denied. He won’t even take her phone call. ICE COLD. She keeps sleeping with Jake, but things are different now. Jake isn’t wide-eyed and bushy tailed for Ms. Pope like he used to be. Want to know why? Because he is a stone cold killer!!! In the end of the episode, we find out that Jake is the one who hacked the NSA files AND killed Peter’s boyfriend, who took the fall for the hack. In the last two minutes, Jake is named the new Head of the NSA. Politics is a dish best served cold.

How to Get Away with Murder

ABC

With only about thirty seconds to get our emotions in order between Scandal and HTGAWM, the recap of Wes shooting Annalise is on the screen. Here we go again- put your hands up for part three of the rollercoaster of emotional doom (in the best way possible). The episode starts two weeks after the night she was shot. She comes home from the hospital and lays down when she hears a pounding on the door and cries coming from outside. She gets up and a woman hands her a baby, tells her to take care of it and runs off. If you’ve seen this show before the first thing you learn is that Annalise is not mommy material. She calls Bonnie over and tells her to take the baby because she has to get ready to testify in court tomorrow. Except for when she hands Bonnie the baby, there is in fact, no baby. A high on pain meds, hallucinating Annalise is probably not ready to testify in court on the murder that she and her Keating 5 gang staged two weeks prior. Keating gets her act together kind of and goes to testify in court. Their plan to pin it on Katherine is still in motion. Until Annalise starts getting groggy on the stand, wound-bleeding and all, and says that she doesn’t remember what she saw and doesn’t know if she is lying or not. Probably not the best move Annalise. But then she saves herself by revealing that Catherine told her that she didn’t kill her parents, which breaches her attorney-client privilege and causes everything she just said to be thrown out. To sum it up, they are now going to pin all the murders on Phillip, in an attempt to save an innocent Catherine. All seems well for now. But then Annalise gets home and the crying baby is back. Dun. Dun. Dun!

Last night was full of action packed scenes, what-in-the-world-is-going-on moments and straight psychosis, but we loved every minute of it. How Shonda Rhimes pulls off this creative story telling times three is beyond me. Is Grey going to be okay after her recovery? Is Pope going to keep shacking up with killer Jake? And what the hell is Annalise’s relationship to Wes and that imaginary baby? Until next week, Shonda!
