Coachella Fun Facts:

  • The festival was influenced by a Pearl Jam show in 1993 at the Empire Polo Club because the band was boycotting Ticketmaster and their associated venues. That show proved that the location was great for large scale events. The first official Coachella Festival was held in October 1999, then it became an annual festival in 2001.
  • The headliners for the first show were: Beck, the Chemical Brothers, Tool, Morrissey and Rage Against the Machine. Tickets were $50 a day for the two-day festival.
  • Coachella was nicknamed the “Anti-Woodstock because organizers booked acts based on artist quality rather than radio popularity.
  • Coachella didn’t make a profit until the third year.
  • The iconic Coachella Ferris Wheel is the world’s largest transportable Ferris wheel, second in size to the London Eye. It costs $5 to ride.
  • In 2014, Coachella grossed $78 million dollars, outranking the Gross Domestic Product of several small countries.
  • The most noteworthy appearances include: AC/DC, Amy Winehouse, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, Prince, Paul McCartney, Wu-Tang Clan, Coldplay, Radiohead, Daft Punk, Madonna, Kanye West, Eminem, The Strokes, The White Stripes, Jay-Z, Florence and the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters.
