Exclusive: Inside the 64th Annual BMI Pop Awards

Last night was the 64th annual BMI Pop Award ceremony honoring the writers and publishers of the most-preformed pop songs of the year. Taylor Swift owned the night, taking home Pop Song Writer of the Year and the first ever Taylor Swift Award, in recognition of her creative and artistic talent and influence. This is the second time in the BMI’s 76-year history that the organization has presented an award in an artist’s name – the first was to Michael Jackson in 1990. Other honorees included Bruno Mars who won for “Uptown Funk” and Rachel Platten for “Fight Song.”

New You was in attendance at the history-breaking event and got to chat with the biggest names in pop music today: Imagine Dragons, Rachel Platten, Colbie Caillat, and Cher Lloyd. We also got to talk with the shining new couple, Courtney Cox and David McDaid.

Singer, songwriter, and honoree, Rachel Platten talked with us about her inspiration behind writing her hit “Fight Song.” “I wrote this song when I was going through a really hard time and I needed to remember to believe in myself.”  “My songs are deeply personal; they are like journal entries. They are a place where I work out my emotions.” She also talks her favorite trends, which include chokers, leather moto jackets, and floral dresses.

Courtney Cox and new beau, Johnny McDaid of Snow Patrol, showed up arm in arm. They talked about what music the couple enjoys, their first time meeting Taylor Swift, and what is next for them career wise and as a couple. McDaid jokes that all they do is listen to Snow Patrol and watch Friends. Being someone who binge watches Friends and enjoys a good Snow Patrol sesh, I can totally relate. Watch their full interview below.

The Radioactive rock band, Imagine Dragons talked to us about their writing process. “Wayne sent me a guitar riff. Dan just said hey just send me some acoustic guitar. A lot of our demos are really big sounding. So I sent him a simple guitar part and the rest is history.” They also talk about their best memories with Taylor Swift.

Grammy winning artist, Colbie Caillat talked her new song “Try” and explained to us the message behind it. “I was telling Baby Face that I was so exhausted by the whole thing. And he was like I don’t know why you women try. We like simple and natural. So we went that direction with the song and I’m hoping that everyone can learn to represent who they are, imperfections and all.” She also dishes on her natural easy breezy vibe.

The English singer, songwriter, rapper, and model, Cher Lloyd discussed her new album with us. “I’ve co-written everything. So I’ve been the main person driving it for the first time in my career. I’ve now stepped out from being this little prepackaged pop artist into actually figuring out what I want.” She let us know what beauty trends she likes and the ones she hates. Attention, rainbow highlighter, Chery Lloyd thinks your tacky and she hates you. Listen to her full rant below.
