Five Decades of Cher

“Women are the real architects of society.”
Today we celebrate the 70th birthday of one of the most legendary women to ever walk the earth. We are talking about award-winning actress/singer/fashion icon Cher, who breaks every rule in the book and wins every time. We are talking about a woman who was married by 18 years old, was a No. 1 pop star by 19, and a TV star by 25; a woman whose career has spanned across decades and across mediums from music to television to film; a woman who won a Golden Globe in 1974 for The Sunny & Cher Show, an Academy Award in 1988 for Moonstruck, and a Grammy Award in 2000 for Believe.
Cher and husband Sonny Bono launched trends with “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.” With her jet black straight hair, big pearly eyes and outrageously gorgeous stature and style, “We blew out everybody’s envelope,” she told People at that time. “Nobody looked like us.”
From punk wigs, to multi-hued feather headdresses, and perm blowouts, Cher carved her mark at the top of the fashion totem for all to emulate – or at least they tried to.
Her wild style cannot be duplicated, as top designer Bob Mackie once told People, “Not too many people can wear what Cher wears.” Mackie was responsible for many of her classic looks from the 70’s and 80’s which help to launch her career into super-stardom.
And through the sky she went, up, up and up; with talent, heart and style that will live on for lifetimes and beyond. Here are some of those iconic looks from over the years:
