Ideal Sunglasses For Your Face Shape

Summer is almost here so you might be thinking about updating your eyewear. However, before you head out to buy a new pair of sunglasses, it’s a good idea to consider which frames and styles will best suit the shape of your face.

As you probably already know, not all frames are complimentary for every face. When shopping for shades, you want to find a pair that will accentuate your best features. The first step toward that goal is figuring out whether your face is square, round, oval, or heart-shaped.

Determining your face shape is pretty easy. First, pull your hair back and looking at your reflection in a handheld mirror. Then, use a dry-erase marker or a lipstick to trace the outline of your face on the mirror.

Once you’ve figured out which shape you have, here are a few suggestions for finding your ideal pair of sunglasses.

  • Square You typically have the same proportions of width and length so you want to avoid angular styles and look for frames with curved edges that will soften your look. Round, rimless, or aviator styles will do the trick!
  • Round You’ll want to add some structure to your face to set off its natural roundness. To make your face appear thinner and longer, choose angular frames in square or rectangle shapes. Oversized frames are also very flattering for round faces.
  • Oval Your face suits most frames, but you will want to keep proportions in mind so skip styles that are too oversized, narrow, or deep-set. Square, round, aviator, and cat-eye can all work for you.
  • Heart-shaped Your face is broadest at the temples and narrowest at the chin. You can add balance by picking geometric frames with wide lower edges. Cat-eye, oval, aviator, shield, and rimless frames will enhance the features of a heart-shaped face. Definitely stay away from top-heavy frames.
