Jordana Brewster: Brains, Beauty and Blockbusters

Jordana Brewster is quite the force to be reckoned with. She is best known for her role as Mia Toretto in the car racing, trouble making, can’t-help-but-love-it cult franchise The Fast and The Furious. And it doesn’t stop there; we officially deem 2016 the year of Jordana Brewster. She has not one but three major roles on television so far this year, and it’s only April!

She most recently played the part of Denise Brown, Nicole Brown’s sister in the captivating and emotionally charged adaptation of the trial of the century, The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story. She is also starring in the second season of ABC’s Secrets & Lies, a murder mystery where she plays Kate Warner, wife to Michael Ealy and the center of this season’s murder case. As if we aren’t already buzzing with enough anticipation, Brewster is also set to be in the Lethal Weapon reboot, where she plays Dr. Maureen “Mo” Cahill, the LAPD’s hostage negotiator that doubles as the in-house therapist. On top of her gold-plated resume, Brewster is also a wife, and a mother to two-year-old Julian, as well as a self-proclaimed geek having graduated from Yale with a degree in English. As I previously mentioned, a definite force to be reckoned with.

New You had the opportunity to speak to the scholarly starlet about her partnership with Zyrtec and her long-term struggle with allergies, her health and beauty routines, the upcoming Fast 8, and the long list of her exciting upcoming roles.

New You: First off, let’s talk about you teaming up with Zyrtec. What do you hope to accomplish with this partnership?

Jordana Brewster: I’ve been an allergy sufferer all my life. I realized through Jamie, a makeup artist I’ve worked with for many years and a fellow allergy sufferer, that there is a thing called allergy face, and there are things you can do for it. So I just love being able to spread the word and help other women out there fix allergy face. Zyrtec can definitely make you feel better. When I have allergy face, and I’ve got the puffy face, the watery eyes, and the red nose. I feel way better when I take my Zyrtec and get 24-hour relief.

NY: So how do you personally overcome what you call “allergy face”?

JB: What I do is I contour. I use a tinted foundation, blush, and a bronzer. I love the Armani tinted foundation that gives you a bronzy glow. I also think waterproof mascara is really important if your eyes are running. Then also using a pop of color on your lips can be really good because that sort of distracts from everything else that’s going on, if all else fails!

NY: Being in the spotlight, as you are, and being a mother, how do you maintain your clear skin and great figure?

JB: I sort of do tried and true things with the skin. What you eat definitely affects how you look so I try to eat really healthy fats like avocado and eggs. I try and eat organic as much as possible. I drink a ton of water. And I love exercising which helps keep your skin clear because it’s circulating everything. I love running. I run about 2 miles a day. I love hiking, and I meditate, which really chills me out. If your cortisol levels are all over the place, and your hormones are out of whack, that will affect your skin in a big way.

NY: Speaking of meditation, I read that you practice Vedic meditation, can you tell me more about that?

JB: Yeah, I started meditating about six years ago. I felt like it was something I needed to do because I was really stressed out, and I didn’t feel very grounded so as soon as I started meditating I felt this sense of groundedness, which is really what I needed. It’s something that I kept up because it has had so many benefits. I meditate in the morning for around 20 minutes and then at night for 15- 20 minutes, to this day, it’s benefiting me so much.

NY: You have played so many different types of roles in your career, starting off in the soap opera All My Children, then the big screen action film The Fast & The Furious, and now murder mystery on ABC’s Secrets & Lies. What is your favorite type of role to play?

JB: I love all the roles that I play, they are all special to me! But I loved playing Denise Brown because she’s a real person and I felt like I needed to honor her. I felt like I needed to really do the research. It kind of merged the creative aspect of my personality and the geeky part of my personality. I am a book worm, I went to school, I love studying. I got to really study up on her, and I really enjoyed that. So that was one of my favorites.

NY: I love that you are a book worm! I was so impressed to see that you studied English at Yale. I also studied English, so I wanted to know, who is your favorite author?

JB: It shifts. The classic one who I love is Virginia Wolf. Right now, I’m reading this book called The Prodigal by Greg Jackson. I don’t love a lot of modern writers, but he is fantastic. That’s a collection of short stories that I’m really really into right now.

Furious 7
Furious 7

NY: I am also a huge Fast & Furious fan, will you be a part of the upcoming Fast 8?

JB: They are shooting it. I don’t know whether I’ll be part of it. I’m not sure.

NY: Your character is a classic. I think the fans would love it! But I also see that you are in the Lethal Weapon reboot, how exciting! Can you share a little teaser with us?

JB: It’s so much fun to shoot. It stars David Wayans, who I grew up with and is hilarious, so it was so much fun to work with him. I love the movie, and hopefully, we get to continue to explore it in the series.

NY: That’s awesome are we going to get the pleasure of seeing any of the original three (Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, and Joe Peschi)?

JB: I don’t know, that would be amazing! But that is a question for the creators.

Secrets & Lies- ABC

NY: You are also starring in the new season of Secrets & Lies, and everyone is highly anticipating it! What can us viewers expect this time around?

JB: I think it’s fun that it’s a new cast. It shakes it up. I think viewers really enjoy that there’s a beginning, middle, and end within ten episodes. That’s really appealing to people. Michael Ealy is such a good actor and fun to work with, and Terry O’Quinn is amazing. It’s a great cast. It’s a different dynamic than the first season, but there’s as many twists and turns and as much mystery. Everyone will get to see it soon, and they won’t be disappointed.

NY: My signature way to end an interview is to do a quick New You Lightening Round.

NY: Sex in the City or Friends?

JB: Sex in the City

NY: Celebrity Crush?

JB: My celebrity crush growing up was actually David Bowie.

NY: Favorite vacation destination?

JB: Cabo

NY: Favorite lipstick color?

JB: Nude

NY: Fill in the blank… If I wasn’t an actress, I would be a ________.

JB: Therapist or professor.
