Meet Country Music’s New Queen, Kelsea Ballerini

22-year-old Kelsea Ballerini is one to watch out for. She’s fresh off her Academy of Country Music Award win for New Female Vocalist of the Year, just released her music video for her single, “Peter Pan,” and performed with her celebrity crush, Nick Jonas at the ACM Awards, and that’s just in one week.

Kelsea was born to be a country singer. She grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee and wrote her first song at age 12. At 19, she signed with Black River Entertainment and in 2014, she released her debut single, “Love Me Like You Mean It.” In May 2015, she released her first album, “The First Time.”

On July 4th, 2015, “Love Me Like You Mean It” reached number one on the Billboard Country Airplay, making her one of the only solo female country artists ever to score a number one hit on her debut single!

Her second single, “Dibs” reached the top of the Country Airplay chart in March 2015, making her the fifth solo female country artist to score back-to-back number one hits with her first two singles.

The talented Ballerini has accomplished so much in only a few short years. We think her newest hit, “Peter Pan” is on its way to the top of the charts. She’s also touring with Rascal Flatts starting June 17th, currently on the road performing at music festivals around the country, and working on her second studio album.

Oh, and did we mention she’s one of Taylor Swift’s good pals?

New You had the chance to catch up with Kelsea right after her ACM win and she talked all things beauty and fashion, Taylor Swift, and gave us the scoop on her next album.

New You: Congrats on winning the ACM Award for New Female Vocalist of the Year. In the past, singers like Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain, and Taylor Swift have won this award. How does it feel to win such a big award?

Kelsea Ballerini: It feels great!! It’s cool being in the category with all the girls that I’ve been out on the road with this past year and I am just proud to be a girl in country music right now.

NY: What was it like performing with Nick Jonas?

KB: Growing up, I was a huge Jonas Brothers fan and getting to perform with one of the boys who was on my walls growing up was incredible. Nick is so talented and I loved collaborating with him.

NY: Talk about the fashion and beauty in your music video, “Peter Pan” and what it was like filming it. Is it about anyone in particular?

KB: We really wanted to make this video a start of a new chapter and show a different side of me. It was so fun getting to act and play dress up and almost make a mini movie! We wanted to go really dramatic with the fashion, hair, and makeup and I absolutely love how it all turned out. In regards to who the song is about, I’ve definitely been in a relationship where the boy had some growing up to do.

NY: What’s your favorite beauty product? Any beauty tips, especially while on the road?

KB: Dry shampoo is my lifesaver. I use it a lot along with texture spray so I have tons of volume! On the road, I try and make sure I wash my face every night before bed. After being on stage with a lot of makeup, I want to let my skin breathe and have a break.

NY: What’s the best advice Taylor Swift has given you?

KB: She told me to not worry about being too cool or too polished. Life is too short. She is a gem and I adore her.

NY: How would you describe your style?

KB: I feel like style reflects your mood. So my style definitely changes day-to-day. One day I’ll be in an indie/boho vibe and the next day I’ll be in sweatpants and a t-shirt. Currently, I’m wearing boy’s sweatpants if that says anything! I definitely love to dress comfy when I am home since I am always dressed up for performing!

NY: What do you want people to know about you that they don’t know about you already?

KB: I am currently working on writing for my next album and new music will be coming soon. I am so excited.

NY: Who inspires you?

KB: Lately, I’ve been really inspired by songwriters. I’ve been trying to go to a lot of writers round’s in Nashville and writing with and collaborating with as many people as I can. I love being inspired by creative people.

NY: What’s next for you?

KB: I am touring with Rascal Flatts this summer and I am so stoked! I’m also about to start recording for my next album too!

NY: What are some tips for healthy eating on the road? How do you stay fit on the road?

KB: Whatever city I’m in, I try to find local juice bars and healthy places to eat. I also try and drink Emergen-C any chance I get. I don’t have a ton of time to work out on the road, but whenever I get the chance, I love to walk around the towns and explore!
