Met Gala: The Unsung Fashionistas
Posted On May 05, 2016
The Met Gala was Monday, but I still haven’t soaked in all of the costumes that paraded through the red carpet.
We have heard about the Kardashians’ repetitive Balmain looks, Beyoncé’s miss, and Zac Posen’s dress that stole the night, but what about the ones who passed right through our eyes without recognition?
This is not a list of who got the theme right or wrong, but a list of the celebrities and designers that deserved more recognition and should have made the Best Dress List!
Let’s start with the queen of fashion Anna Wintour, in Chanel Haute Couture. The dress featured embellishment and fringe at the bottom.
Then was Maria Sharapova, in a red gown. The tennis player arrived in the early hours of the evening in a dress by Colombian designer Juan Carlos Obando. Let’s all take a minute to praise the look. The dress featured cold shoulders and a closed collar that made the dress just perfect for the Gala.
Later came the girl, who along with Sarah Jessica Parker, broke the schemes and wore a suit instead of a dress. Fashion model, Alexa Chung, made her big entrance with a bejeweled suit. Statement dresses are expected to walk down the red carpet, but she caught our attention with a suit!
Rachel McAdams’ look radiated while walking the red carpet in a Valentino Haute Couture dress. The dress featured sequins everywhere, even writing in the dress’ tail, and a sheer skirt. Take a couple of minutes to just appreciate the details of the dress. Not only was her dress eye-catching, but her makeup was on point too! The dark lips and black eye-liner just created the pop of darkness the look needed.
Actress Saoirse Ronan nailed the features trend with a gown by Christopher Kane. She went with a simple white dress that had the right touch of pink feathers. Feathers can be tricky and a total miss. A couple of celebrities didn’t pass the test– sorry Rita– at the Met Gala, but Ronan’s didn’t look trashy, on the other hand it was a total hit!
Jessica Chastain graced through the multi-colored carpet in a blue Prada dress paired with Brian Atwood shoes, Piaget jewelry, and an asymmetrical lob. The color combination between the peacock blue and her red hair is stunning! Plus the dress had black embellishment details that couldn’t go unnoticed.
The Danish Girl actress, Alice Vikander, stayed within her young and fresh image with a short custom Louis Vuitton dress paired with chunky laced-up boots. Now, let’s break down the dress. First, it matched the multi-colored carpet, which looked amazing in the photographs. In addition, it featured sequins, leather, and red patent leather for the right color touched. She looked sensational and very comfortable! Now the boots! Out of all the celebrities who tried to master the trend in the carpet, she was the only one who got it right. That’s right, Selena Gomez, Michelle Williams, and Jennifer Connelly need to take notes!
So now let’s talk designers for a minute. Olivier Rousteing took his Balmain Army and dressed them in metallic, like a robot-galactic themed squad. However, a favored squad were the Marchesa girls!
First was Nina Dobrev, from The Vampire Diaries. The actress arrived to the Gala in a gold embellished Marchesa dress. She looked stunning! Hopefully, Disney was watching and taking notes for the new upcoming live-action, because that dress had princess written all over it!
Next we have Poppy Delevingne, in a see-through embellished Marchesa dress. She was one of the first to arrive. The details of the dress are just impressive. She paired it with chandelier earrings and a bright bejeweled clutch that went perfectly with the gown. The straight hair with no major hairstyle and dark lips were a perfect match to complete the look.
Lastly, one of the looks to tie for first place with Zac Posen, the one and only Karolina Kurkova. The model was dressed in an original custom-made Marchesa gown that not only was splendid, it mastered the “Manus X Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology” theme for the gala. Marchesa designers, Georgina Chapman, and Keren Craig, brilliantly mastered the trend by incorporating LED lights to the dress that lit-up depending on what people were sharing on Twitter!
There you have it, a full list of my top looks of the Met Gala 2016. Which one was your favorite?
