Update: Michael Strahan is Leaving Kelly Ripa to Join Good Morning America Full Time

Update: April 20, 2016

It looks like fans weren’t the only ones shocked by Michael’s departure from Live! with Kelly and Michael. Apparently, so was Kelly. According to sources, Ripa did not show up for work this morning because she was “livid.”

According to E! Online, Ana Gasteyer filled in for Kelly. Sources say the reason behind Kelly’s absence just one day after the news about Michael, was due to the fact that she was blindsided by the decision.

On the other hand, Michael seems to be doing just fine as his new gig with Good Morning America is a great opportunity. He made sure to show his gratitude for Kelly on Wednesday’s show:

“I really want to thank, of course, Kelly Ripa, because Kelly welcomed me here and I’ve learned so much from her, and she’s just been an amazing influence on me. This has truly changed my life to be here with her, and I know that the show will continue to be strong and great because of Kelly…Kelly, I thank you. I love you and everyone else here at LIVE!.”

Sources have also stated that the decision was not up to Michael. Daily News is claiming that Ben Sherwood, Disney Media co-chair is the man behind everything that’s happening.

‘This decision was all Ben Sherwood. Ben has always been ambitious and this is his way of trying to save Good Morning America while also positioning himself to be Bob Iger’s successor running all of Disney,’ says one source at ABC.

Don’t you just hate breakups?

Kelly Ripa has to split up with yet another co-host. Michael Strahan is leaving Live! with Kelly and Michael to join Good Morning America full-time.

Michael confirmed his decision to leave earlier today with US Magazine:

“I look forward to continuing to work with the incredible team at GMA,” Strahan, 44, said in his statement to Us. “It is an exciting opportunity to be able to bring unique stories and voices to the audience.” He will start his new gig at GMA in September.

We can remember how sad we were to see Kelly’s former co-host, Regis Philbin leave their show back in 2011. Nevertheless, Michael stepped in and had been with Kelly for the past four years inspiring tons of people worldwide.

Michael knows he is on to bigger and better things, but still sees his departure as “bittersweet:”

“My time with Live! with Kelly and Michael has been transformative, and my departure will be bittersweet,” Michael said in the release. “Kelly has been an unbelievable partner, and I am so thankful to her and the entire team. I am extremely grateful for the amazing support I’ve received from all of the fans.”

The former NFL player has been appearing on Good Morning America twice a week since 2014, and clearly, Michael did something right. James Goldston, the president of ABC News, shared his excitement about bringing in Michael for a full-time role:

“Michael has been a stellar addition to the broadcast. Over the past two years on GMA, he’s proven to be a tireless and versatile broadcaster with an incredible ability to connect with people, from veterans to American pop culture icons and newsmakers. He will end a four year run as Kelly Ripa’s co-host on Live!, where he has honed his skills as an interviewer with genuine warmth and a quick wit. At GMA, he’ll now have even more opportunities to tell stories that inspire, inform and empower people.”

Although Michael’s departure from Live! with Kelly and Michael may be bittersweet, we can’t wait to keep up with the Michael’s talent and charm over on Good Morning America.

We don’t know the exact date Michael will be leaving his current gig, but we know that he will be starting his full-time role with GMA in September.
