Oscar Pistorius Found Guilty of Murder

Double-amputee Olympian, Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, in an appeal that overturned his original conviction of culpable homicide.

Let’s backtrack to Valentines day of 2013 when Oscar Pistorius shot and killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Seven months of trial occured and in September of 2014 Pistorious was found not guilty of murder but convicted of culpable homicide, which is South Africa’s term for manslaughter. In South Africa, a murder conviction usually comes with a minimum of 15 years in prison, but Pistorius was sentenced to five years, for the homicide of Reeva along with other firearm charges. Yet Pistorius was released under house arrest after serving less than a year of his sentence.

State lawyers appealed the culpable homicide charge and today Pistorius was found guilty of murder. The appeal court said that the original judge was wrong on several points of law. Her conclusion that Pistorius had not foreseen that his actions could kill somebody was overturned. Justice Eric Leach said when reading the ruling, “I have no doubt the accused must have foreseen and, therefore, did foresee that whoever was behind that door might die.” Thus taking this sentence from culpable homicide to murder, which is a minimum of 15 years.

Steenkamp’s father expressed to the media that his daughter will now be able to rest well knowing justice was done. It seems Pistorius has had it offensively easy despite his horrifying actions, and now he will pay for what he did. There’s nothing like the smell of justice in the morning.
