The Battle of the Turtlenecks
Posted On Jan 21, 2016
The Beatles wore them in their promo images. Steve Jobs deemed them his forever uniform. Drake wore one in the Hotline Bling video. Turtlenecks are a timeless statement of fashion that we will never quite get over.
The Origin: Turtlenecks or Polo necks as they were called back in the day, started in ancient Europe in 15 Century AD. In the 1800s they went mainstream- and all the cool athletes, sailors and law enforcement officers were wearing them.
The Evolution: French philosopher, Michel Foucault made the beloved turtleneck his signature look. Which in turn made turtlenecks a staple among the artist and intellectual types.
Then comes Steve McQueen, Audrey Hepburn, Marcia Brady, the entire Love Actually cast, and now Kim Kardashian and all the major starlets. Why has the turtleneck stayed with us all these years? Because it is freaking awesome, that’s why!
Now for the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Drum roll please. The ultimate battle of the turtlenecks. Joan Rivers would be proud. Who wore it better?
