The Dark Side Of Instafame

In a surprise move, Australian model and Instagram star, Essena O’Neil, decided to take a permanent social media detox. For many the common goal of social networking is to become the, “it person” or “go-to girl” while thousands, sometimes millions, of admirers double tap each photo as a way to pay homage to the envious life portrayed on the Web.

With half a million followers and counting, dozens of hearts and numerous comments many were shocked and curious to learn of her sudden departure. We soon discovered, O’Neil was living a lie through the Internet, continually getting sucked into the social media hype.

Known for gorgeous photos, brand promotion and racy bikini pics, she was living the dream life of luxury and ease. At least this is what we were led to believe.

In one of her final posts she revealed, “Deleted over 2,000 photos here today that served no real purpose other than self-promotion. Without realizing, I’ve spent majority of my teenage life being addicted to social media, social approval, social status and my physical appearance.”

She further explained many of the photos posted to her account were staged. “NOT REAL LIFE – I didn’t pay for the dress, took countless photos trying to look hot for Instagram, the formal made me feel incredibly alone,” she said.

Although criticized by those who suggested Essena O’Neil was hypocritical for redirecting users to her personal site, it’s a bold move either way. As the timeless cliché goes, “if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” This 18 year-old is proving to the world that in order to find true happiness, self-confidence and inner peace, that search begins from within.
