Fridge Fixes

If you’re in the market for simple-to-follow, cost-friendly recipes that are free of hormones, irritants, and chemicals, take our DIY expert’s advice and hit your fridge.

Mother Mayo
This mixture will strengthen and detangle your dry, or damaged hair. “The combination of protein and nutrients in egg yolk—along with fats in the mayonnaise, olive oil, and avocado—will give your hair an intensive hydration treatment,” says Lori Kenyon-Farley, co-founder of Ritual Wellness organic juices. Expect to get soft, shiny, easy-to-comb, faster growing hair.

Grocery list:

1 egg yolk

1 tbsp mayonnaise

¼ avocado

2 tbsp olive oil

What to do:
Mix all ingredients together. Apply to damp hair and leave on for an hour. Wash out and enjoy.

Tight is Right
This gentle treatment gives you firm, “lifted” skin in an instant. Lemons slough away dead skin while yogurt’s antibacterial properties help prevent breakouts. “Greek yogurt contains live cultures, lactic acid, zinc, and other minerals and enzymes that help hydrate while getting rid of dead cells,” says Kenyon-Farley. Unlike manufactured products that can throw off your hormones, this skin tightener can be done two to three times a week to yield clear, soft skin.

Grocery list:

2 tbsp plain Greek yogurt

Juice of 1 lemon

1 tbsp honey

What to do:
In a bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, and honey. Stir until smooth. Apply to your cleansed face and neck. Allow to dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Leave on until you feel the skin tighten, or up to one hour. Rinse with lukewarm water followed by a cold rinse.

Dairy Queen
For a quick and economical alternative to a sumptuous spa treatment, a pineapple and coconut milk facial combats dry, flaky skin and restores hydration. “Pineapple contains bromelain that reduces inflammation and redness. Coconut milk hydrates the skin and keeps it soft and smooth, as its fat locks in moisture,” says Kenyon-Farley. Redness and puffiness disappear, leaving your skin stress-free.

Grocery list:

4 slices fresh pineapple

2 tbsp coconut milk

What to do:
Combine pineapple and coconut milk in a food processor and puree
until smooth. Spread the paste evenly over your face and leave on for 10 minutes. Remove with a warm, damp cloth.
