Glamazon, The First Black Owned Beauty Brand Launching on ShopHQ

Changing history and allowing for representation, Glamazon Beauty Cosmetics makes its mark as the first Black-owned beauty brand being featured in the ShopHQ home shopping network, on June 30th (3pm EST). The Founder and President, Kim Baker, is renowned for her NEW YOU Beauty Award-Winning Second Skin Foundation Stick. In this interview, NEW YOU sat with Kim Baker to obtain an inside look into the upcoming launch, her impact in the industry, and the future of Glamazon.

Q. Does your launch consist of existing products, or should we expect new products on ShopHQ?

A. Everything is new on ShopHQ and we will be selling everything from lip glosses, to foundations, to powders, and offering a little bit of education as well, which is what I love to do for everyday women.

Q. Education on ShopHQ, as in you’ll be doing makeup tutorials?

A. Teaching women the fundamentals, how to find your right shade of foundation, and how to mix foundations for when you are at that in-between shade. You know how when the summer’s leaving and the fall is here and we’re right in the middle of that. So, I want women to understand that if you mix two foundations, you get that exact shade of you.

Q. As Founder of the first black owned makeup brand to be featured on ShopHQ, do you have any advice for anyone entering the beauty industry who wants to follow in your footsteps?

A. Yes, figure out what it is that you want to bring to the beauty world. For me, it was about foundation. It performed and looked like skin and having women wear products that felt comfortable. If you feel that there’s something that’s missing, and ironically, at the time when I was starting Glamazon, I felt like a lot of people weren’t speaking to African American or Afro-Latina women because we come in so many hues. You’ll see a company with a foundation, and they’ll have eight shades for white skin and one shade for black. I don’t understand how that works. So that’s what I wanted to bring to the forefront, and whatever someone else feels that they’re passionate about, bring it, because we need it.

Q. What is your everyday motivation to empower others in the way that you do?

A. Being unapologetically you. Those are my words to everyone. There’s only one you in the world. And whatever you bring to the universe is a good thing, if it’s out of positivity.

Q. Is there anything you have incorporated into Glamazon that you have learned from collaborating with other artists or brands in the industry?

A. I love working with other artists. Believe it or not, every artist has their own technique, their own way of application. And I’ll never forget- there was this makeup artist who was working on a model. I wanted to see her apply it, and I think she thought I was trying to steal her tips. But I wanted to see her touch and her application. And that’s the beauty of artistry, which is that everybody has their own gift. I’m known for being extremely natural. I love a natural looking palette and then somebody else might be great with this cut crease fad that’s going on, so I feel like every artist brings some piece of them.

Q. Are there any special techniques you have used doing celebrity makeup?

A. I don’t like to try to create another face; there’s a lot of people that’ll do things and it’s their own personality. They’ll make a strong wing, highlight, and contour. I like contour, but I try to keep it to a minimum just so it kind of creates shape and structure. If you see my face right now you can see my cheekbones, you can see my nose. I try to enhance, and I think that’s what I’m kind of known for, bringing out a woman’s natural beauty.

Q. What’s an essential product you use on your clients?

A. My Second Skin Foundation and my Eye-Conic Awakening Concealer. My concealer, which is a newer product, truly does what the concealer is supposed to do. It conceals, it does not move, and it does not crease. It’s an amazing product, and those are the essentials.

Q. The Glamazon mystical Veil 2-in-1 moisturizing face primer has Hyaluronic acid making it moisturize- can we expect you to expand into skin care in the future?

A. Absolutely. As a matter of fact, ShopHQ was really surprised that I didn’t do skincare. I’m really known for having good skin, but that’s because I take care of it and take the correct vitamins and minerals. So, yeah, most people are really surprised to find out I have a granddaughter that’ll be 17.

Q. Which Glamazon products do you recommend we wear to our next NEW YOU Beauty Awards?

A. Hello, Second Skin Foundation! You know it’s the winner.
