La La Anthony Continues to Shatter the Glass Ceiling

Defining success on your own terms is no easy feat especially within the realm of Hollywood, but, “Power” star La La Anthony has proven from the start that she is unstoppable in many ways. For instance, her resume excels in all facets from securing the prestigious honor of being named as a #1 New York Times best-selling author, a multi-faceted actress with roles in box office hits including “Baggage Claim” and the “Think Like a Man” franchise as well as a cemented prominence within the cosmetics industry with her signature makeup line “Motives for La La.”

Adding further to her repertoire of credits, she was recently announced as the co-producer of Eclipsed, a Broadway play starring Oscar Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o. Anthony has also joined forces with musical trailblazer, Timbaland to executive produce a hip-hop docu-series that is currently in development. The media mogul’s on-screen magnetism and unequivocal courage to succeed correlated with her fearlessness to defy the odds has guided the 36-year-olds career trajectory. Without a doubt, it has also proven her staying power within the industry. At this point, it is safe to say, La La’s longevity will stand the test of time and continue to reach dynamic heights.

Perhaps her most distinguished role leading the way is being a family woman as a loving wife to NBA all-star Carmelo Anthony and devoted mother to 9-year-old son Kiyan Anthony. After speaking with the television personality, it was crystal clear, La La Anthony is definitely in a class of her own. Encompassing a heart of gold, her awe-inspiring friendship with Anthony “Superman” Skipper, an 11-year-old battling brain damage, is just one of many tales of her courageous spirit, by always staying true to the mantra, “aspire to inspire” while paying it forward in the process.

A woman of many hats, find out how she manages to balance it all, the role social media plays in influencing her personal style, and when life throws a few curveballs in your direction, La La also offers a couple of gems that can help you become the conqueror of your story.

New You: In an industry that at times can become discouraging and quite tough how do you continue to motivate yourself and stay on top of your game?

La La Anthony: I am my own competition. I do not compare myself with others because the only person I strive to be better than is myself in all aspects of my life. Being a better wife, mother, actress, business woman, becoming better at working out and living a healthy, fulfilled life. Honestly, competing with the next person has never really been my thing because I have always focused on being the best version of me.

NY: If you had to start over from scratch, knowing what you now know, what would you do differently?

LA: I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Actually, I have a small tattoo on the inside of my arm that reads, “No Regrets.” With that being said, I don’t know if there are things that I would [necessarily] change because I personally feel everything [including the bad] has brought me to the point I am now and it is exactly where I am supposed to be.

However, if I had to think of one thing, it would be something within my acting space. I wish I would have started my acting career sooner rather than later but at the same time, I was also busy fine tuning other skill sets before I dove into acting. Ultimately once again, I believe it came at the right time it was supposed to come because I am still becoming successful at it and working really hard by continuing to hone my craft.

NY: Describe one of your biggest failures or challenges. What lessons did you learn and how did it contribute to a greater success?

LA: I don’t know if I would consider it as a failure but within this acting space, every time you audition for a role and receive the news that you did not land the part, it is definitely a hard pill to swallow. In a perfect world, it would be so simple to give it your all and nail every audition but that is unrealistic.

Personally speaking, each time I don’t get a role it literally inspires me to work much harder and do things a little differently next time around. I use each one those moments as a stepping stone that enables me to step back in order to reach greater heights by pushing myself forward.

NY: As a business woman, what is one of the toughest decisions you’ve had to make? How did it impact both your personal and professional growth?

LA: I believe one of the toughest decisions as a business person is the balancing act of being a career woman, mom, wife, and figuring ways to juggle it all. Everything changes depending on what is taking place at that particular time, therefore, you always have to sacrifice something. As any working mom or wife knows and understands, keeping all of the balls in the air and everything going on in the process is quite the challenge.

NY: You have an eye for fashion, who would you consider your style muse and why?

LA: It’s a typical answer but Jennifer Lopez gets it right all of the time. I absolutely love her style! I can’t say that I have ever seen her have an off day. I also love the style of the people within my inner circle such as my best friends Ciara and Kelly Rowland because their style choices are amazing. Nowadays with social media, I don’t just look at celebrities, I browse various pages and observe what others are wearing to receive style inspiration as well.

NY: What is your favorite dress or look you’ve worn on a red carpet?

LA: One of my more recent looks that I have worn was to the Chi-Raq premier. It was a gold sequined Tom Ford dress and I absolutely loved that particular look from head to toe.

NY: With both you and your husband Carmelo being in the spotlight with successful, thriving careers, what is the secret to not only keeping the relationship spicy but also establishing a healthy partnership and happy marriage?

LA: It is truly about making time just as you would make time for anything else. Similar to the way you make time for work, your kids, for a meeting, or anything that you would consider a priority in your life. You have to also make certain that you still have date nights planned and carved out alone time in order to bond. By doing spontaneous things it keeps the relationship fun and spicy but also helps avoid complacency and falling into a regular routine. We [Carmelo and I] make sure in the middle of all the chaos that we always make time for each other. Whether it includes, switching up date nights, having moments just talking all night, laughing, or watching funny movies.

NY: You have a solid inner circle with friends such as Kim Kardashian-West, Ciara, and Kelly Rowland. Can you tell us why it is important to have a group of girlfriends and maintain a circle of friendship?

LA: It is important for women, in general, to constantly uplift each other. When you converse with your girlfriends they understand what you are going through [whether good or bad]. In turn, it allows all of you to motivate and feed off each other. The people within my circle are successful and striving to be great listeners and great people all around. Some of my friends are mothers, some are wives and because of this we draw from one another in different areas. It’s really important and extremely vital to have women who support women in your core group that lift you up, especially when you need it the most.

NY: With such a hectic schedule, what would you say is in the “LaLa Anthony” survival kit while you’re traveling extensively or on location filming?

LA: Hmmm…I would definitely have to say hand sanitizer for myself and my son [Kiyan]. I also have to carry makeup wipes at all times. Regardless of how tired you are, taking off your makeup is a must. A few more things to include in my survival kit are eyeliner, lip gloss, or lipstick, preferably from my makeup line “Motives for La La.” If you wear a nice liner, good gloss and a little mascara you are good to go! I try to carry these few essentials with me as well as Aquaphor because with constant travel and movement your skin and lips can tend to become dry.

NY: Speaking of Motives cosmetics, what was your motivation behind “Motives for La La?”

LA: Motives was already an existing line and I created “Motives for La La” because I wanted to bring “beauty in every shade,” [that is actually a slogan of Motives] with foundations and diverse colors for all shades from the entire spectrum. The makeup line is doing extremely well and I believe we have done a wonderful job of making that happen.

NY: How do you find the time to stay in shape? Also, are there any foods you have to cut out of your diet?

LA: That’s definitely a hard one for me because I fluctuate with working out. I literally just started working out again (laughs). My two favorite workouts that I absolutely love and try to rotate often are flywheel and boxing. I always maintain the mindset that when you look good and take care of your body, you feel good. It translates into your work and your overall well-being about how you personally feel about yourself. Since working out is not something that I naturally like to complete, I have to play a mind game with myself because I know it has to get done.

I am a chocolate fanatic and that is a food that I need to stay away from specifically when I am [really, really] trying to walk a straight and narrow.  I have to cut back on the chocolate because trust, it will get me every single time.

NY: You often post images of Superman Anthony and it’s obvious you are extremely close. Can you tell us how your relationship came to be?

LA: Of course! I actually noticed his story on Instagram because a few people mentioned it to me. After reading about him, I was instantly touched from him being a normal kid to having a seizure in the bathtub which caused him to go under water. That is what led to his current condition because his brain was without oxygen while underwater. Originally, I only gave a donation but shortly after donating I wanted to talk to his mom, [a single mother of four] and learn more about his family. Ultimately, that is how our relationship began to blossom by connecting with his family and learning their personal story. I also loved the fact that his name was Anthony because obviously that’s my family’s last name. He [Superman Anthony] loved basketball as well and I thought that was also very cool. There were a variety of factors that drew me to him.

I talk to his mom on the phone literally every day to check in and see how he is doing and we recently went to Miami to help celebrate his birthday. My family has been extremely instrumental in connecting him with great doctors in the Miami area to give him the proper care that is needed in order to further his improvement. I am extremely proud of the work we have done so far and I am hoping to make another trip to visit him in April because we are very close and beyond proud of our hero, “Superman Anthony.”
