If you wanted to obscure your identity like a pop-culture superhero, you’d reach for a mask. But these face-shading objects may well be the real skin-saving stars of the day, helping women achieve firm, radiant skin.

“The purpose and benefits of a facial mask is to improve hydration and [decrease] redness, and to reinforce the skin’s natural defense against daily environmental factors such as weather, sun, and pollution,” says Berenice Rothenberg, owner of Berenice Electrolysis & Personal Beauty Center in New York City. Which mask is right for you this fall? We’ve rounded up a few of today’s most virtuous skin-care shields.

How it does it: While it might be a little on the pricey side, this blend of avocado protein, rose geranium essential oil, and calcium makes skin appear plumper and radiant.

What it does: Karuna Luxe Skin Regenerating Mask ($58, karunaskin.com) repairs skin cells for those who prefer a traditional sheet mask.
