Pirelli Showcases the Power of a Woman
Posted On Dec 03, 2015
Known for their risqué images since the calendars inception, this year the company has decided to take a different approach. The 2016 Pirelli calendar was recently revealed and showcased a wide array of trailblazing women. Following in the footsteps of Playboy magazine, the calendar features some of the entertainments elite and literary greats fully clothed, at least for the most part. One can’t help but wonder if this is the new trend?
“We are in the midst of a perfect storm of cultural icons and politics and Hollywood. Between the first credible woman presidential candidate, all the powerful female characters on television from ‘Supergirl’ to ‘Madam Secretary’ to ‘Scandal,’ the pressure for parity in pay, it is impossible to ignore the empowerment of women. Besides, who uses a calendar anymore? It has to stand for something else,” said Jennifer Zimmerman, global chief officer of the McGarryBowen advertising agency.
Gracing the pages of this iconic calendar are: Natalia Vodianova (January), Amy Schumer (December), Mrs. Gund (March), Serena Williams (April), Ms. Lebowitz (May), Ms. Hobson (June), Yoko Ono (October), Ava DuVernay, (July) and Shirin Neshat (September), to name a few.
Throughout the years, this incredible gem has only been distributed to a select 20,000 V.I.P.’s including, politicians, royalty and musicians.
What are your thoughts on the historic feminist approach of the Pirelli calendar, is it a political statement or exploitation? You be the judge. Either way, we wish we could get our hands on this amazing artwork that features the crème de la crème of pioneering women who continuously defy the odds.
