Redefining Motherhood with Vanessa Simmons

One of Vanessa Simmons most crowning achievements thus far has been assuming the proud title of becoming a mother but mommyhood hasn’t slowed down this unstoppable business maven. Her will power paired with tenacity and insatiable appetite for success has catapulted Simmons desire to inspire and empower women, specifically mothers from around the globe to continuously own their sexy. As part of the highly anticipated, “Vanessa Collection,” with Naked Princess, the designer’s primary focus was to, “empower women and let them know it’s OK to be sexy, even after you’ve had a child. Don’t allow anyone to make you believe that you cannot be sexy.”

Utilizing the skillsets deep-rooted in her genetic code by following in the footsteps of her family’s legendary path, there is truly no limits to Ms. Simmons success. A trailblazer in her own right, within the realms of fashion, beauty, and acting, she is shattering the glass ceiling, harnessing her entrepreneurship endeavors by leading the way for all avenues of working women.

New You had a chance to chat with the television personality and dynamic designer as she dished on upcoming projects, personal style, this year’s New Year resolutions, and how to still keep it saucy after becoming a parent.

What was the inspiration behind your partnership with Naked Princess?

I’ve always wanted to go into lingerie and actually began working with a team back in 2012 but it was a project that just didn’t work out. I decided to take some time off and refocus my vision but I became pregnant and had a child which led me to take another year off. After I had my baby, people would always say, “Once you become a mom, you can’t be sexy,” or “You have to be more covered up.” In this case, it propelled me to want to do a lingerie line even more.

I teamed up with Naked Princess, a local store in L.A. that is truly amazing and absolutely incredible at what they do. With the “Vanessa Collection,” I decided to focus around a mom’s point of view with the designs being a bit more mommy conscious. The high waist thong can cover up possible incisions anyone could’ve had during child birth but at the same time it’s still sexy. My goal through this line is to offer women empowerment, whether you’re a mom or not. I want them [women] to love their curves, love themselves and allow themselves to be sexy because a lot of women will shy away from it.

What’s the number one thing a mother can do to feel sexy?

Really, truly loving yourself and understanding that I’m still the same person I was before. I always try to take as much “me time” as possible throughout the week. I realize I have more responsibility, which of course is a beautiful thing being able to see my daughter grow up and become a little person. Honestly, I believe maybe once a week try to make a point of getting your nails or hair done, a massage or something that makes you feel sexy and that helps you to personally love and empower yourself.

How do you feel about being a working mom?

It is very challenging because you want to be around for everything with your child. At the same time, I do not want to lose myself and the things I pursue outside of being a mother. It’s definitely something that takes balance especially knowing when to go hard at work and when to bring it back to still be there for your baby/child. Although it is extremely challenging, I absolutely enjoy every minute of it because I’m personally pursuing things I love.

In terms of your personal style? What do you gravitate toward for your everyday outfit?

Oh goodness, if I could only wear sweat and yoga attire the entire day (laughs). Honestly, I absolutely adore old Hollywood, how fabulous it was and everything about that entire era. I have a classic, chic edge I gravitate towards even if I’m dressing down. Ultimately, I just throw a little bit of edge or modern chic to it because I’m definitely a classic kind of chick.

It’s the beginning of 2016 do you have any resolutions you hope to achieve?

Personally, my number one is making my dream body by staying healthy and fit. For two years I’ve been teeter tottering back and forth at the gym (laughs). My other resolution is to become a better person everyday by striving to become better than I was from the day before in different facets of my life. With my family, my boyfriend, my daughter, being a good daughter to my parents, and a great business woman.

You mentioned staying fit and healthy as one of your resolutions. Can you tell me some of the ways that you are achieving your dream body?

My diet consists of scaling back on a lot of sweets because I have a terrible sweet tooth and I love to bake. I complete cardio or weight training five times a week, once a day but sometimes I’ll do it twice a day. My diet also includes a lot of water intake which I greatly recommend to anyone looking to take down their tummy. As soon as you wake up in the morning, drink a glass of room temperature water with lemon and you will see changes immediately. It’s also great for your skin, digestion and your body overall.

Growing up, was it tough throughout the years trying to distinguish a name for yourself outside of your famous family?

I’ve always looked to my family for inspiration and have always felt incredibly lucky to come from my particular family background. A lot of people often say, “You have to get out of the shadow.” My response is usually, “OK I’m going to do that by just pursuing the things I love and working extremely hard.” Although I do want to make a name for myself, I want people to understand my last name does not hinder me.

Also, people usually say, “You’ll always just be a Simmons,” and my response is “Yes, I’ll always be a Simmons and my goal is to add to my family’s legacy the best way I know how to.” I have so many people within my family that I can look up to whether in business, music or fashion. It’s all really quite exciting for me.

Tell us something people don’t know about you?

I honestly feel I don’t share enough. I’m a really good cook and no one ever expects it! My boyfriend loves my food and he tells me he doesn’t just eat anything. I learned how to cook after my boyfriend and I began dating and eventually started living together because we couldn’t order takeout every day. I would say over the past two to three years, I’ve become really good in the kitchen. One of my specialties that he loves are chicken meatloaf muffins (little meatloaf cupcakes) with homemade red mashed potatoes and cabbage.

If your entire life was a movie, what title would best fit?

My life movie would be a dramedy called, “Unpredictable.”

If you had a theme song, what would it be?

I think a theme song would be, “Just Loving Me.” My journey has been coming to accept myself with who I am and what I have to offer to the world despite what people may think of me.

What new projects are you working on?

I’m working on a second collection with Naked Princess as well as a jewelry line with a company based in London. I’m also gearing up to launch my website by the end of this month, “vanessajsimmons.com,” which will include my designer collaborations and self-produced content pieces that I’ve been working on over the past year and a half. The goal is to empower women through beauty, fashion, fitness and inspiration. When I speak of inspiration, it consists of empowering women on how to achieve their goals, follow their dreams and be the best in all aspects of their lives.

Is there anything else, you would like to share?

I’m extremely thankful at this point in my life, thankful for my daughter and just my personal journey. I’m also thankful to everyone for all of their support throughout the years and supporting me with every journey I embark on.
