The 3 Skincare Swaps You Need to Make This Spring
Posted On Apr 23, 2021
Spring is here, and that means a change in wardrobe and activities. But, it should also mean an adjustment to your skincare routine to prep and protect your skin for summer. While you don’t need to completely overhaul your morning and evening routine as the weather changes, there are a few adjustments you can make to help your skin recover from the colder months. (Think of it as spring cleaning for your face). So, what swaps should you make? Here, board-certified dermatologist and RealSelf advisor, Dr. Joel Schlessinger reveals his top tips.
Add An Exfoliator
Gentle exfoliation is essential to rejuvenate dry skin leftover from winter. Why? Well, it removes dulling skin cells, debris, and other impurities, leaving the complexion feeling soft and smooth. It also stimulates healthy cell renewal, giving skin a healthy, glowing appearance. But, be careful not to exfoliate too much—a few times a week is enough if you’re using a facial scrub. When you exfoliate every day, it doesn’t give your skin enough time to recover, which leads to dry skin becoming drier and oily skin producing more oil.
Use Lighter Products
With warmer weather approaching, you’ll also want to switch out your heavy winter skincare products for lighter formulas. If your skin tends to be oilier in the spring and summer, switch your cream cleanser for a lightweight gel cleanser and your heavy moisturizer for a sheer, oil-free moisturizer. And other doctors agree with Dr. Schlessinger.
Board Certified General Surgeon Dr. Alexander Villares likes Obagi Nu-Derm Foaming Gel for acne-prone skin. Meanwhile, Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Jo Herzog likes Obagi-C Rx Cleansing Gel. She said, “It leaves skin feeling smooth and clean. It pairs well with the rest of the vitamin C regimen.”
Although sun protection is essential all year long, it’s even more important when you’ll be spending lots of time outside. So, it’s important to start incorporating products with more sunscreen. An SPF 30 sunscreen is great everyday protection. But, if you’re outdoors, apply an SPF 50 sunscreen for added protection. Additionally, if you’re swimming or sweating, water-resistant formula is important. Dr. Herzog agreed, adding, “Obagi Sun Shield Matte is one of the best sun shields with high zinc oxide content. It’s great for patients with hyperpigmentation.”
