The Defining Beauty Trends of 2015
Posted On Dec 15, 2015
2015 was full of smiles and full of heartbreak, but more importantly, it was full of shamelessly fabulous beauty trends. With the influence of social media, these trends spread like wildfire. What will people remember about 2015? They will remember our perfectly sculpted faces, thick eyebrows, big lips and our textured lobs, and that’s not such a bad way to go out.
Here are the trendiest of the beauty trends of 2015:
Before social media and the Kardashian takeover, contouring was only used on Hollywood movie sets and photo shoots. But thanks to the Kardashians, contouring and strobing have become a thing of the average woman in 2015. Contouring is the art of using makeup to sculpt bone structure. It involves blending powders a few shades darker and lighter than your skin into the hollows of your face (under your cheekbones and jaw lines). Strobing is the yin to the yang of contouring. It’s pretty much a fancy way of highlighting. So instead of using darker shades to create contrast, strobing uses highlighters to illuminate where light naturally hits your face. Let’s all scroll a year back on our Instagram profiles and look at the way we made up our faces then. I can guarantee it looked nothing like the selfies that flood our feeds today.
2015 is the year of the eyebrows and it’s one of the best things that has happened to us as a society. Light skinny eyebrows are a thing of the past. Dark, full eyebrows took over in 2015 and here’s hoping they are here to stay. If filling in your eyebrows isn’t in your make up regime, please do yourself a favor and invest in an eyebrow kit. As Jack Black once said, “You must never underestimate the power of the eyebrow.” Preach Jack!
This beauty trend was all thanks to Kylie Jenner, the lip queen. Do we remember the #KylieJennerLipChallenge? Well, let’s not get into that again. Maybe just use some lip liner and call it a day. Over-lining your lips can give them a fuller look. Perfect for selfies and Snapchats. For those who wanted to take it one step further, lip plumping was the answer. The fact that both of these lip enhancing techniques became so popular shows how trendy big lips have become this year.
90’s Lip Colors
Speaking of lips, 90’s colored lipsticks dominated this year. From the nude brown Cher Hororwitz fabulously wore to the goth plum of rocker Gwen Stefani, the lipstick shades of the 90’s definitely came back around for some more fun. What’s better about it this time around? These grungy lip colors are now for everyone, you don’t have to be a rocker to wear the dark purple and you don’t have to be a girlie girl to wear a red. It’s 2015 and we are wearing whatever lip color our hearts desire. Thanks to MAC’s retro matte lipstick collection we can get a bit of nostalgia every time we go to reapply our lipstick.
We deem the official hairstyle of 2015 the textured lob. Celebrities that had this look at some point in 2015 include: Adele, Jennifer Lawrence, Lauren Conrad, Lucy Hale, Taylor Swift, Kristen Bell, Emma Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kerry Washington to name a few, but the list goes on and on. This was a refreshing change of face from the long straight hair we had been seeing for a while now. So lob on celebrities, long bob your hearts out.
The nail trend that dominated 2015 was definitely the coffin nails. The nail revolution went from square shaped nails to the sharp cat claws, to a mix between the two: coffin nails. Coffin nails look exactly like they sound, they are long and slender like a cat claw but instead of thinning out to a sharp tip it squares out like a normal acrylic. To sum it up, coffin shaped. Some celebs who have been seen owning this trend were Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, Christina Milian, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter and Rihanna.
We can’t wait to see what is in store for 2016. Will the lob still be the ‘it’ hairstyle? Will thick eyebrows still be in? I guess we’ll have to wait and see what beauty trends await us. Until then I will be filling in my eyebrows. Ta ta.
