Posted On Mar 15, 2016
Known for her undeniable talents, electrifying performances, and tenacious spirit for success, Nicole Scherzinger has dominated the public arena for nearly two decades. Her vocal versatility, fearlessness to fly in the face of adversity, and conviction to affectionately convey emotional coloring through her artistry has solidified the Hawaiian beauty’s complete embodiment of being a triple threat.
As if that isn’t enough, the former Pussycat Dolls lead singer’s philanthropic efforts through charitable organizations such as the Special Olympics, UNICEF, and Stand Up 2 Cancer has awarded her the prestigious honor of receiving the “Global Gift Philanthropist Award.” With no obvious signs of slowing down, Scherzinger’s illuminating persona will further captivate nationwide audiences through her onscreen portrayal of Penny as she is set to co-star in the upcoming television adaption of Dirty Dancing, premiering on ABC.
So what’s next for the multi-faceted superstar? The answer is quite simple, her boundless dexterity, irrepressible performance ability, and fervid zest for the arts has catapulted her desire to leave an indelible mark both personally and professionally. New You had an opportunity to converse with the Dancing with the Stars champ about her upcoming Hollywood Bowl performance with acclaimed classical artist Andrea Bocelli, beauty secrets, musical influences, and the power of letting go.
My first question, how did you learn to dance so well?
Well, I guess you can say it is in my DNA. Growing up, my mother taught me a great deal because she was a hula dancer. I also attended a performing arts high school where I received a wide array of experience. In hindsight, I have always loved to dance! I grew up with Paula Abdul being one of my idols. Naturally, I wanted to move exactly like her, and of course Michael, and Janet Jackson. Furthermore, I studied the arts [acting/dancing] while in college.
Honestly speaking, my forte has always been singing not dancing, but it wasn’t until I joined the Pussycat Dolls that I realized I was in a group with all dancers! This was the definitive point when I told myself, “I’m not going out there looking as if I am not a dancer!” As a result, I worked extra hard to keep up with the other ladies within the group.
What was one of the biggest challenges you had to overcome after leaving an all-girl group to becoming a solo artist?
I believe there is a safety net at times when you are in a group. However, when you are on your own it is a bit more vulnerable and everything is on Y-O-U and only Y-O-U. Initially, it was kind of scary leaving the group because you begin to think to yourself, “Wow, I have all of these women around me to rely on.”
Abandoning the camaraderie of it all, from traveling extensively, touring around the globe, and literally doing everything together to being on your own, can be rather terrifying to some extent. On the other hand, at the end of the day it was inevitable because it [being a solo act] was important for me as both an artist as well as an individual. Similar to other members of the group, it would have been scarier if I did not break out and do my own thing because I would not have been true to myself, especially in that particular stage of my life.
Can you talk about the ONE defining moment when you knew you wanted to be in the spotlight?
I don’t know if it was necessarily so much of me wanting to be in the spotlight, but I can recall a particular moment. When I was in the seventh grade I participated in a talent show and I had to sing a song, entitled [I think] “Kiss Her Goodbye?” I can’t quite remember the exact name but it went something like this [begins singing]:
She’ll never love you/the way that I love you/ cause if she did she wouldn’t make you cry/she might be thrilling, baby, but my love’s….
Not sure if you have heard of that song, but I was the understudy for a guy, and as fate would have it, he didn’t show up! At the last minute I had to perform. It was not until I was center stage, singing my heart out and belting out the notes that I realized, “Wow, this feels natural. This feels right at home for me.” Afterward people began to clap and give me a standing ovation. Prior to this, since I was around 6 years old, I always wanted to be Whitney Houston but I never had the courage to sing in front of people. Although I definitely tried to mimic and emulate her style and perfection.
That night onstage in the seventh grade when I showed up for the understudy I had an epiphany [so to speak]. Up until that point I always felt awkward and uncomfortable [growing up] but that specific night something magical happened. I was super comfortable and the way the audience received my performance, I knew and felt deep inside of my heart that I was in the perfect place.
That is amazing, an opportunity presented itself and you seized the moment by being prepared.
Yes, I am definitely always prepared because ultimately that’s what it’s all about. When preparation meets opportunity you just never know what can happen next.
What is your main beauty secret?
Other than water being my favorite drink, receiving an adequate amount of sleep and exercising. When you sleep, drink plenty of water, and sweat it out, there is a glow that illuminates from an entirely different place. It literally tightens everything all together from a positive frame of mind.
I also really love coconut oil! I grew up with my family making it [coconut oil] for me. Seriously, there isn’t anything that you cannot do with coconut oil. I’m in love with the smell, how natural it is, and all of the multi-faceted capabilities it is comprised of. Did you know you can use coconut oil for your hair, skin, and face? You can also use it as deodorant or utilize it to brush your teeth.
Wow, I didn’t know coconut oil embodied so many health and wellness benefits?
Absolutely! It can also whiten your teeth if you add a little peppermint. It can serve as an antibacterial, lotion for your body, and you can use it as a natural remedy for eczema, foot fungus, and odors. Sometimes when I lay out I’ll use a little because it contains SPF as well.
Let’s say you are out skiing and your lips become super chapped. Just use a little coconut oil because, as previously mentioned, it is all natural. It does not contain chemicals that will make your lips feel the need to be dependent upon [ingredients], unlike other products. There is no doubt it is the way to go!
I’m actually working on my own line of coconut oil that will be coming out very soon. I personally feel every woman should have coconut oil accessible to them at an affordable price point. To have something they can carry in their handbag because they are adamant about not going anywhere without a small tube of coconut oil.
What is your workout playlist or 5 song playlist that helps get you motivated?
There is a song called, Tell the World by one of my favorite Christian artists, Lecrae, featuring Mali Music. It is similar to a rap song, but it’s truly uplifting. I am also in love with any of SIA’s music. Her newest song right now [Unstoppable] is beyond amazing. I will throw in some of my old System of the Down into the mix if I have a hard hill to hike [while working out]. Overall, I am different because I can switch it up and get into the latest rap hits [which I love] but I also love Christian pop-rap music as well. It usually has a crazy beat but contains an inspirational, meaningful message behind it.
What should every woman try at least once in her life?
Hmmm…A selfie stick (laughs). I will admit that is my latest obsession. I would honestly have to say, letting go. Just letting go of something that no longer serves you or adds value to your life, personal growth, and development.
What quote do you live by?
I live by the Bible verse Philippians 4:13: “I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.” Along with my mother’s lifelong advice to never compromise yourself.
Any personal ambitions yet unattained?
Oh, absolutely, I’m just beginning to get started! I am currently working on a project where we are going to utilize all of my talents and greatest potential. I can’t wait for that because it is going to encompass every aspect of the arts.
What are you most looking forward to with your Hollywood Bowl performance?
I can’t wait to sing and perform on stage with Andrea Bocelli. He is like an angel. I have never felt someone’s presence onstage the way I have with him. A lot of times when you are singing with other artists they are very giving but at the same time you know they are extremely self-aware. When I previously sang with him it was so pure; he gave me all of his energy, all of the love, and I felt completely safe when I performed with him. We all can become very nervous at times, especially when you are singing with someone as great and classic like him.
My last experience at the Hollywood Bowl was playing Maureen in Rent. That was a pivotal moment in my life and in my career. Therefore, me being able to share the stars with him [Andrea Bocelli] at the Bowl this year will be epic.
Can you describe what’s next for Nicole Scherzinger in a single sentence?
First, I will begin with the word Unstoppable, similar to SIA’s song. I’ll further add “Encompassing every aspect of her talents and potential with depth, meaning, purpose, love, and sunshine! Also with an occasional margarita (laughs).
