Turn Off The Faucet Turn Up The Beauty

By Gina De Angelis

Being the Earth-friendly, eco-conscious person that you are, you water your lawn after the sun goes down, you set your dish washer to light, and have recently installed a water efficient toilet. You have this whole water conservation thing down pat. Or do you…?

It’s no secret that water shortages are an ongoing battle that people across the globe deal with on a daily basis. According to Water.org, 1 in 10 or 663 million people lack access to safe water. That’s a staggering amount especially for those of us who can simply walk on over to any nearby faucet for a rinse or quick sip.

But I’m just one person, what can I do? With kids, jobs, dirty laundry, online degrees, and one too many optional yet mandatory after-work happy hours, who has the time to dedicate to finding solutions for water shortages and how to better manage the water at our disposal? Not you – and that’s ok. While we can’t all be expected to play Captain Planet and rid the world of water waste problems, there are things you can still do at your level to help.

Looking fierce and fabulous can take a good amount of water – but it doesn’t have to! Thanks to new initiatives and innovative products, you can look, smell, feel, and be your best without all the water waste that it once entailed. Get ready to look at your beauty products in a whole new way.

No, we’re not screaming – but we might as well be with this line of water-friendly skin and hair products that does it all! From shower gel, to body lotion, to lip balm and every skin silkening and dreamy creamy product your skin craves in between, they’ve got you covered. As an all-natural line that contains no synthetic fragrances, preservatives, silicon, color, paraffin, or oil-based raw materials, there’s little to not love.

On our own quest to put a dent in the world’s water waste woes, we tried STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME! Shampoo and Conditioner. Since the average American shower uses 17.2 gallons (65.1 liters) and lasts for 8.2 minutes at average flow rate of 2.1 gallons per minute according to www.home-water-works.org, this is definitely a good place to start. It went a little something like this…

All Natural Lavender Sandalwood Regenerating STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME! Shampoo was a delightful yet decadent sensory journey through a lush garden of wonderfully calming lavender and tangy sandalwood. With a good amount of suds, the shampoo lathered quite nicely unlike other natural shampoos that leave you wondering if the gunk is actually being removed. Once rinsed, hair was left feeling squeaky clean and revived. And of course, as instructed, water was turned off while in use.

All Natural Lavender Sandalwood Regenerating STOP THE WATER WHILE USING ME! Conditioner was a similar tour through fragrance nirvana as the smooth texture of the product removed knots and tangles while leaving behind a sleek and soft feel even while wet. As more of a lightweight formula compared to other options on the market that are thick, plaster-like products, this conditioner felt easy on and easy off without the heavy mess. Directions indicated to let the product soak in for four minutes so this offered plenty of time to turn off any water-wasting.  (stop-the-water-usa.com)

Another beauty routine that many women, and increasingly more man as well, swear by is the beloved manicure and pedicure. Although it may seem harmless, salons and even your home bathroom are riddled with areas where water waste sneaks its way in during the process. Since going without a great looking nail is obviously not an option, what’s a girl to do? Meet the Waterless Manicure.

butter London Waterless Manicure Kit

butter London’s Waterless Manicure Kit ($29, ulta.com) is your solution to getting that fresh-from-the-salon look without the excessive water usage that comes along with it. Built on the belief that the use of water and cuticle clipping compromises the integrity of a long lasting manicure, this kit was formulated not only to remove water from your routine but to offer you the hottest manicure with less chipping and less chance of infection due to no cuticle clipping. Get the best of both worlds for the world! We had to get in on all this nail excitement. This is how our take on the waterless manicure went.

First, a coat of the Melt Away Cuticle Exfoliator was applied. This step is done instead of soaking them in water. Genius! While that soaks and gets your cuticles nice and soft, we did a nice round shape on the nail using the included nail file and buffer – so convenient. Next, simply using a nail, those pesky cuticles were pushed away. With the Scrubbers 2-in-1 Prep & Remover wipes, the cuticle pieces swiped right off. It was a seamless cleaning that left the nail cuticle free and smooth. Once that’s done, the fun part starts! After a coat of Nail Foundation Priming Basecoat, Nail Lacquer, and then finally the Hardwear Shine UV Topcoat (allow for drying time in between each, obviously) it was done. Just like that you too can have a fabulously water-free manicure that both looks good and does good!

With just a little ingenuity and a lot of care, we can each do our part to ensure the precious resource that fuels our lives is most responsibly used now and for generations to come.
