Happy Birthday! 30 Years of Lady Gaga
Posted On Mar 28, 2016
Lady Gaga turns the big 3-0 today! Known for her otherworldly music videos and avant-garde fashion, Gaga flipped the pop genre upside down when she broke out onto the scene with her The Fame album. On top of being this generation’s Queen of Pop, she takes it one step further and uses her music and influence to speak for those who aren’t being heard. She was at the forefront of the LGBT movement, she stands for women empowerment, and is now speaking up for sexual assault victims.
So in honor of her birthday, here are the moments that made us stop and stare, stop and think, and fall in love with the Mother Monster.
Her thought-provoking music videos
Remember when Gaga was birthed from the womb in the beginning of the “Born This Way” video? Besides the graphic intro, this song is all about self-liberation and loving yourself, no matter your race, gender, or sexuality.
Then there was the epic “Bad Romance” video. Where she went from full body jumpsuits with only a mouth hole, to a full-on shining Alexander McQueen outfit including her infamous monster toed heels, to ultimately setting the stage on fire.
You haven’t made it until you do a collab with the other Queen of the music industry, Queen Bey. The 9-minute “Telephone” musical masterpiece/ Quentin Tarantino mini movie was everything we ever wanted in a music video.
Her jaw-dropping wardrobe
Lady Gaga credited her raw VMA ensemble with a deeper political meaning, regarding the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” military policy. “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon, we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones,” the singer said on Ellen. “And I am not a piece of meat.”
Lady Gaga is more than just her outrageous outfits; she has an alter ego that is beautifully elegant. Such as her outfit at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. The long black dress contrasted with her greyish-blonde hair is absolutely stunning.
At the 2016 Grammy’s, Lady Gaga honored the late David Bowie. She embodied his spacey yet fiery spirit perfectly on the red carpet in her Marc Jacobs gown.
The performances that tugged at our hearts
Her 2016 Super Bowl performance left us all with goosebumps. Her Hunger Games-esque red, white, and blue outfit awoke the patriot in all of us.
The 6-minute David Bowie tribute at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards was just the closure we needed to cope with the loss of this iconic pop star. She performed “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “Suffragette City,” “Rebel, Rebel,” “Fashion,” “Fame,” “Let’s Dance,” and “Heroes.” Lady Gaga absolutely killed the performance. Gaga definitely had the Bowie touch.
At the 2016, Oscars Lady Gaga gave us all the feels with her emotionally-charged performance of “Til It Happens to You.” Gaga played the piano and sang the ballad that speaks to sexual assault victims all over the world. The climax of the performance was when a group of survivors walked out and surrounded Gaga at the piano with the words “Not Your Fault” written on their arms.
At just 30 years old, Lady Gaga has accomplished more than others do in a lifetime. She’s dominated music, television, fashion, and philanthropy. So Happy Birthday Lady Gaga! We wish you another 30+ years of love, success, and happiness!
