Veggie Month takes place throughout the month of March and highlights the health, nutrition, and animal welfare benefits of becoming a vegetarian. We’ve put together a list of celebrities that have used their experiences in following a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle to protect animal rights while encouraging others to do the same.

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen has a jam-packed résumé involving American comedienne, television host, actress, writer, and producer all on the list, but one major achievement some may not know about is her animal rights activism.  As a vegan, she has worked with a number of other charities to advocate for animal rights. In 2009, PETA awarded Ellen its Women of the Year Award, recognizing the work she has done to promote vegetarianism.

Christian Bale

Growing up, former Batman, Christian Bale lived with his animals rights activist father, who taught Bale to always be compassionate about animals. Bale embraced vegetarianism when he was just nine-years-old after reading Charlotte’s Web a childhood classic.

Carrie Underwood

This American country music singer, songwriter, and actress chickened out on meat at just 13-years-old because she couldn’t imagine eating one of her own animals. In 2005 and 2007, Underwood was named PETA’s sexiest vegetarian.

Paul McCartney

Paul has been a vegetarian and has spoken out for animal rights since 1975. In 2009, Paul, along with his daughters, Mary and Stella, launched the Meat Free Monday initiative to raise awareness about the environmental impact of eating meat and the benefits a vegetarian meal can have on one’s health. Fun fact: the former Beatle even made a guest appearance in an episode of The Simpsons, in which Lisa becomes a vegetarian.

Natalie Portman

After attending a medical conference with her father and witnessing a demonstration of laser surgery on a chicken, Natalie decided to become a vegetarian at the innocent age of eight. In 2009, she chose to follow a vegan diet and refuses to wear feathers, furs, or leather. At her wedding to Benjamin Millepied, in 2012, she ensured that a 100% vegan meal was served.

Tobey Maguire

American actor and film producer, Tobey Maguire, has been a vegetarian for years and is currently working towards a completely vegan diet. Maguire has been able to benefit from vegetarian alterations to his diet, allowing him to bulk up for Spiderman and drop weight for Seabiscuit.

Pamela Anderson

Pamela turned vegetarian in her early teens and has since been a passionate animal rights advocate. The former Baywatch star now follows a vegan diet and has starred in numerous campaigns for PETA. Most recently, in 2015, Pamela collaborated with Amélie Pichard to create a vegan shoe range. Size 8, please!

Alicia Silverstone

Since becoming a vegan in 1998, the actress and activist has encouraged others to follow a similar lifestyle. In 2009, Alicia released a vegan cookbook, The Kind Diet, and in 2012, during the Pussy Riot trial, she wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin, inquiring for vegan meals to be provided to Russian prisoners.
