Fan Saves HGTV’s Flip Or Flop Host’s Life

HGTV’s television host, Tarek El Moussa, has a lot to be thankful for especially with the upcoming holidays. The Flip or Flop personality was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after a nurse who was tuned into the show spotted a lump on the lower half of his neck. Wow, talk about being in the season of blessings!

While binge-watching a marathon of the show, Ryan Read, a huge fan noticed the irregular bulge on El Moussa’s thyroid. Read’s caretaking instincts immediately kicked in as she hurriedly contacted producers explaining her concern and urging the lifestyle correspondent to take the necessary steps in order to receive a biopsy. Fast forward, and the then 31-year-old, father of two received the shocking diagnosis that he had thyroid cancer.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Thyroid cancer occurs in the cells of the thyroid — a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck, just below your Adam’s apple. Your thyroid produces hormones that regulate your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight.”

Although he was previously informed the lump was benign, the reality is it was actually cancerous and had to be removed immediately. While undergoing surgery, doctors noticed the cancer had unfortunately spread to his lymph nodes forcing the home renovation expert to undergo thyroid radioactive iodine therapy.

Two years later, his cancer is in remission! The 33-year-old is thankful that both the treatments and surgeries were a success but he also continuously expresses his gratitude to Ryan Read, the viewer who practically saved his life.

“If it wasn’t for TV and her noticing this huge lump on my neck, I would still be moving forward with my life, with cancer in my body and probably never do anything about it. I feel fantastic. I’m in shape, I’m taking all my medicines, and I’m currently in remission. Every day that goes by, the odds of the cancer decreases, so we’re really excited for that” he told People Magazine.

In a recent episode of The Doctors, the husband and wife duo of the hit show were able to meet Read for the first time since receiving her initial email two years ago. The reunion was a momentous and a joyous celebration. It proved how the power of a good deed saved what so many of us sometimes take for granted, health, wellness and life itself.
