Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams took the stage Sunday night at the BET Awards to accept the honor for humanitarian of the year. He delivered a passionate, powerful speech in front of a large audience including Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, and many other celebrities.
The former public school teacher explained that this award was not for him, but was for “the real organizers all over the country. The activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers of students that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do.”
Williams is part of the Black Lives Matter movement and the executive producer of Stay Woke, a documentary that traces the evolution of the movement. In 2014, Williams stood with thousands of other people and protested the shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
He’s on the board of directors at The Advancement Project, an organization and advocacy group that focuses on racial justice issues. He also writes articles for The Huffington Post and CNN and expresses his frustrations with the current system.
Past winners of the BET Humanitarian Award include NBA star Dwyane Wade, John Legend, Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean, and Denzel and Pauletta Washington.
