Meet Your New Miss USA, Deshauna Barber

All hail Miss USA, that crown looks mighty good on you.

Miss District of Columbia, Deshauna Barber was crowned Miss USA last night in Las Vegas out of the 52 contestants vying for the prestigious title.

Aside from her obvious beauty and brains, what set the 26-year-old beauty queen apart is the fact that she is an Army Reserve Officer. Deshauna is the daughter of a retired Army master sergeant and was commissioned a quartermaster officer in 2011. According to CNN, “she serves as a logistics commander for the 988th Quartermaster detachment unit at Fort Meade, Maryland.”

With her new title, Deshauna wishes to highlight the issues all veterans face after returning from war. She has a passion for helping those who battle with post-traumatic disorder as stated in her bio. She also plans to find ways to help with suicide prevention.

Deshuana wholeheartedly believes in gender equality, which was proven more evident in her answer during the interview section of the competition. When asked to comment on whether or not the Pentagon’s decision to open up all combat roles to women put a “political correctness over our military’s ability to perform” Deshauna answered:

“As a woman in the United States Army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military. We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I’m powerful, I am dedicated and it is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States.”

Barber placed 1st above runner-up, Miss Hawaii, Chelsea Hardin and second runner-up, Emanii Davis, Miss Georgia.

Miss USA also took the time to put together a moment that we couldn’t help but chuckle at with Steve Harvey advising host Terrance J not to read what’s on the card. This all took us back to Steve’s mistake last year for Miss Universe when he announced the wrong winner.

After anxiously waiting for the results…

Miss District of Columbia USA 2016 Deshauna Barber is named a top 10 finalist during the 2016 Miss USA pageant at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Barber went on to be named the new Miss USA.
