The Brent Shapiro Foundation for Drug Prevention held its Summer Spectacular Under the Stars in Beverly Hills to a packed house of Hollywood’s finest. The star-studded event honored the gorgeous Demi Lovato and all of her philanthropic efforts in advocating for young people with substance abuse and mental health issues.
Now a strong voice in the fight against substance abuse, Demi describes what fueled her to speak out. “What inspired me to go public about my issues I went through was the first time I went to rehab my mom told me ‘you know you can either be open about your story and help people or you can keep it private, and I decided to help people because I think it’s important that people learn from other people’s struggles.”
Having dealt with addiction herself at a young age, Demi thinks there needs to be extra attention paid to others who could be suffering as she did. “I think it’s important to focus on the youth today because the drug problems that are going on in the United States are increasing and increasing and I think it’s very important that we raise the awareness because sometimes you think drug problems only exist in adults, but it’s actually starting to happen in younger ages now.”
Upon receiving her award for the Spirit of Sobriety from the Brent Shapiro Foundation and celebrating five years of sobriety, Demi acknowledges her accomplishments. “Any time someone recognizes me for my mental health work I feel very humbled, but I also have a sense of pride come over me because I know it means people are listening and paying attention.”
