EMMA WATSON THINKS SOCIAL MEDIA IS LIKE A SUPERPOWER

In her role as the protagonist in James Ponsoldt’s movie, The Circle, Emma Watson, was confronted with many social media boundaries on privacy, ethics and freedom.   “Social media is like a superpower,” said the British actress. “It has great power but with that power there is a responsibility and that’s how I see it. It can do great good and it can do great evil.” Watson attended the World Premier of The Circle at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival in New York last night. Initially she thought she was too busy to accept this role. “I was in the middle of other projects but after reading the script I could not stop thinking about it all week –it was rolling in my head,” she said. “And I thought, if I am spending this much time still thinking about this movie, clearly it was something I needed to do. I am fascinated by the world and I totally see how my character, Mae, gets sucked in the way she does. It’s fascinating and I think anything that promises to solve the world’s problems is an exciting thing to be part of.” When it comes to her own social media use, Watson did not change much personally after the movie. “I was always private as it was – it was more that I wanted to create more distance between me and my Instagram account,” she said. “I was just trying to make sure I was choosing to look as opposed to a full on attack or siege of information. I am really mindful of that now.”  When it comes to working with Tom Hanks, the actress has only glowing praise. “It is a dream to work with Tom,” she said. “I feel so lucky I got to do something with him. He is so kind, easy going and a generous actor.”
