Joseph Cedar on why Richard Gere was cast perfectly for his role in Norman

Joseph Cedar, director of the new movie “Norman,” walks us through the character that has many movie-goers anxious to see Richard Gere in an all new light. “There’s this character called Norman who has this way of being involved in everything, even when he’s not invited to be. I think there’s a Norman in this movie that forced himself into my life and made sure that his project happened and in some strange way, the movie turned out to be a thank you note to him. He’s the kind of person who you only realize how valuable he is after the fact and he’s rarely credited. In that sense, I think there’s a Norman in every movie.” When asked how audiences will perceive this completely different version of Richard Gere, Joseph had this to say, “That’s the point! He’s playing someone who is the opposite of everything that we associate with Richard Gere and Richard is a great actor. Sometimes an actor has to take on some kind of physical appearance that is very different from what he is. Sometimes there’s a skill you take on that the actual actor doesn’t have. Here, Richard plays someone who in every way, is the opposite of who he is as a human being and it’s a great challenge to do that. I think five minutes into the movie, Richard Gere disappears and becomes Norman and you forget that the star of ‘Pretty Woman’ is walking in these shoes.” Joseph describes the film as, “A point of view or an experience through the eyes of someone that at least I have never seen before. It’s a character that usually we don’t really appreciate and this movie allows us to get into his shoes and see the role through his eyes.”
