Margaret Atwood at The Handmaid’s Tale Premiere

Margaret Atwood is the author behind the famous book, “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Now, 30 years later, it is being transformed into a series with much buzz surrounding it. Margaret describes what it’s like to be caught up in the whirlwind that is this release. “It feels very strange. But it’s a more fun thing to be doing at age 77 than a lot of other people get to do when they’re 77!” Margaret took on a role in the story that she particularly enjoy. “I don’t play a pleasant person.” She chuckles as she tells us that “of course” she enjoyed the experience even if she wasn’t very nice in her role. The production came together quickly to become the highly-anticipated drama it is today. “Well it wasn’t me so I can’t take the credit,” says a very modest Margaret. “The television rights went with the original movie rights back in 1990 so that got traced through and it ended up that it was MGM that ended up with them. They started developing it and they and Hulu got together in it so at that point I got asked if I wanted to be a consulting producer and of course I said yes, and that meant that I got talk with lots of people and discuss all the choices being made. I got to meet the cast before they started shooting, go to the set, and be in it. So altogether it was quite a trip.” She is confident fans will take a liking to the new adaptation. “I think they [the fans] will embrace the changes. I think they will embrace the changes or else…”
