Melissa Rivers Talks Mental and Physical Health

Erasing the Stigma brought out some of Hollywood’s biggest A-listers, including Melissa Rivers. Passionate about her involvement with mental health awareness causes, she tells New You how she helps. “I’m a huge supporter of D.E.A.R. Foundation. The work they do is phenomenal, not just with suicide but with all mental health. I was so honored that they gave me an award last year and they asked me if I would do more work and they brought me back as the MC this year!” She had some wise words of advice of how she believes we, as a society, can help overcome the issues surrounding mental health stigma. “Talk about it! Talk about it! It’s nothing to be ashamed of. The more we talk about it the more we learn, the more we learn the more the stigma drops, and the more you talk about it the more you find out that you’re not alone and that mental health touches everyone.” Having been affected by mental health problems in her immediate family, Melissa was a supporter of helping those suffering as she explains. “My father committed suicide in 1987 and that’s how I started speaking out about suicide survivors starting at a very young age.” Aside from mental health, Melissa also encourages physical health and wellbeing in a way that only Melissa Rivers could do. “Exercise! And start eating healthy and in a disciplined way young because the second you hit 40, it all goes to hell in a hand bag so if you get the good habits now, stick with them.”
