BRAIN EXERCISES ARE SO IMPORTANT TO RITA MORENA

At 85, venerable actress, dancer and singer, Rita Morena, is all about exercising her brain. “I learned to walk backwards, because it makes your brain work,” said the Latino icon. “The other thing is I am right handed so I have learned to also write with my left hand. Anything that challenges the brain is important and so is walking.” NEW YOU caught up with Morena at the premiere of Netflix’s, One Day at a Time in Los Angeles. Norman Lear’s 1970 sitcom has been re-purposed to focus on the lives of a Cuban – American family and Morena plays the part of the matriarch. When it comes to the characterization of her part, she is not afraid to speak up. “I gave a few suggestions to the writer and Norman (Lear) about my character, the grandmother, and they liked the ideas a lot,” she said. “They liked it so much that I am now not free to talk about it – let’s just say it is very relevant.” One of her favorite scenes in the last season was the scene where the mother and grandmother question whether God exists in the USA. “When I first saw that script, I said ‘can we do this?’, and I thought of course, of course, it is Netflix,” she laughed. “I loved that scene and then there is always the social issue with every single episode – stuff like that, that has real meaning. The audience loves the family.”
