The Rendezvous: Your Weekly Review in a Few
Posted On Jun 17, 2016
After what felt like the longest week of literally ever, we are happy that it is finally the weekend. Read up about the latest on this week’s headlines before your Father’s Day dinner with the family. Let them know how educated you are on the assorted happenings of the world around you.
We Love You, Orlando
After not one but three tragedies in less than a week’s time, Orlando has been receiving support from all over the world. Here is the latest on all of the Orlando heartbreak. It all started with The Voice singer, Christina Grimmie’s tragic death. She was gunned down by a fan during a meet and greet after her Orlando performance and it was just revealed that her murderer was an obsessed fan. His Geek Squad co-workers told TMZ that he was “infatuated” with Grimmie and “wanted to marry her.” He became enraged when he saw that Grimmie had a boyfriend. Her funeral is today at Fellowship Alliance Chapel in Medford, New Jersey. A memorial service will begin at 8 p.m.
The very next day, the largest mass shooting in modern U.S history happened in Orlando at the LGBT nightclub, Pulse. The families of the 50 dead and more than 50 injured are still grieving along with the world. What we know so far is that the shooter pledged allegiance to ISIS, he was previously on a government watch list but was still able to purchase an assault rifle, and his wife knew about the attack. We aren’t exactly sure what will come from this terrorist attack, but America is seeking change on a grand scale. You can donate money to aid Orlando here.
Then on June 14th, our hearts once again broke for Orlando when a two-year-old boy was attacked and dragged into a lake by an alligator at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. The boy was wading in an inch of water when the alligator got him; the boy’s dad fought to save him, but his efforts were no match for the vicious animal. Disney is now putting alligator warning signs up on all of their lake properties in the area.
After all the tragedies in Orlando, we want Orlando to know that we are sending our prayers, our monetary support, and our love to everyone affected by these horrific events. Rest in Peace Christina Grimmie, all of those who lost their lives in the Pulse shooting, and the two-year-old Lane Graves. You will forever be in our hearts. And for all of those injured and grieving during this time we grieve with you. #OrlandoStrong
On Thursday, Democrats threw a filibuster party on the Senate floor. A filibuster is when a senator makes a really, really long speech on the floor to block anything else from getting done. Why are the Dems doing this? Because they are (FINALLY) trying to do something about the fact that someone on the FBI watch list can purchase an assault rifle. For years, lawmakers have been trying to change this and after Orlando’s attack, the Dems aren’t having it anymore. The goal? To pressure lawmakers into taking up a bill that will ban the sale of guns and explosives to people on the terror watch list. Hopefully, the Republicans will jump on board the common sense train soon and help this law get passed.
The Ladies in Orange are Back
Today is the day we have all been waiting for, the return of the sassy Litchfield ladies in orange. Orange is the New Black is back on Netflix with the season four debut. Last season left us on the edge of our seats with so many questions unanswered. What will the backlash from the breakout be? Is Alex going to survive? Will Sophia get out of the SHU? Has Piper completely gone off her rocker? And the biggest question of all, who are these new inmates?! We can’t wait to see what the new cast will bring to the show’s dynamic. Another season of secrets, steamy romances, and sabotage awaits us. Get your popcorn ready and let the binge watching begin!
The Taylor Swift Strikes Again
Taylor Swift, known for her never-ending line of boyfriends, is at it again. Her and long-term boyfriend Calvin Harris ended their year-long love affair in the beginning of June. Fast forward two weeks and Swiftie is already smooching her new man, Tom Hiddleston. The two were seen holding hands and kissing in Rhode Island overlooking a romantic sunset. Calvin Harris posted a cryptic tweet saying, “oh boy it’s about to go down,” accompanied by not one but three skeleton face emojis, which we all knows means something deadly is happening. Then Calvin deleted every picture of him and Taylor on all of his social accounts. Apparently, Tom and Taylor met at the Met Gala, and he has been trying to win her over ever since. The two were last seen hopping on a private jet together in Rhode Island. If Calvin Harris is looking for someone to get back at Taylor with, I am ready and willing. Say the word and I will be there, bae.
Anonymous WINS the Internet
Our favorite Internet hacktivist group, Anonymous, won the Internet this week with its hacking and LGBT-ifying of pro-ISIS Twitter accounts. A hacker who goes by the name WauchulaGhost took control of more than 200 Twitter accounts that belonged to ISIS supporters and changed their photos to pride flags and wrote things like “I’m gay and I’m proud.” He also published tweets mourning the lives lost in the Pulse shooting. WachulaGhost spoke to CNN and said, “You had all those innocent lives lost. I just felt there’s something I could do against the Islamic State to defend those people.” It in no way makes up for the hundreds of lives devastated by the shooting, but it gives us a little ounce of satisfaction. Thank you to the Robin Hood hacker, WachulaGhost for giving us one thing to smile about in the midst of tragedy.
Have a great weekend and don’t forget to get that Father’s Day IG post ready for Sunday!
