Free Tampons for All!

Ladies, can you imagine not having a tampon while you were on your period? Well, it happens way more often than you would think, but thanks to Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland this will be no more!

New York City will be the nation’s first city to require free tampons and sanitary pads in public schools, homeless shelters, and jails. Tuesday’s vote on the matter won unanimously at 49-0. What a great moment in history!

City Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland’s proposal will make pads and tampons free in restrooms that serve 300,000 schoolgirls, it will guarantee product availability to 23,000 women in homeless shelters, and add the force of law to jail standards about sanitary supplies.

“Providing menstrual hygiene products privately, immediately, and for free is also about sending a body-positive message by not perpetuating shame and humiliation, and acknowledging that women’s bodies, even those of women serving time in prison, deserve some dignity during their periods,” said Ferreras-Copeland.

In season 4 episode 5 of “Orange is the New Black,” an inmate considers using her sleep mask as a pad.

After watching this season of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and seeing what prisoners had to do to get their hands on a tampon. It was outrageous. They had to barter and trade illegally in order to not sit in a pool of their own blood for a week.

At the end of the day, all women deserve to have something as simple as a tampon while they are menstruating. If toilet paper is free in public places, tampons and pads should be too. I hope the rest of the world follows suit with this menstruation equality policy. New York City is paving the road for the rest of the nation. Let’s all take some notes!
