I have a new found love and it’s one my boyfriend won’t mind. Cucumbers. I have seriously fallen in love with cucumbers. They have become my new obsession and I can’t get enough. Not only are they loaded with cancer-fighting agents, but they contain nutrients such as vitamin C and beta-carotene that will keep you looking like a spring chicken!

For starters, I have to be honest; I have not always been a big fan of this green veggie. With a palate for starchy foods and sugary treats, I didn’t find the bland flavor very appetizing. But I recently decided to switch things up a bit. I started ditching the French fries and began piling on the greens. I came to the realization that we are, in fact, what we eat. It is so important to be aware of what ingredients you are shoveling into your mouth on a daily basis. Not only can it be the difference between your skin being dull or luminous, but it can also be the difference in life or death (dun, dun, dun!)

So with this in mind, I started to incorporate more greens into my daily regimen and that included cucumbers. To my surprise, I started noticing how amazing they made me feel.

Begin with the Skin

If you are looking to keep your skin beaming, bright and as smooth, and as a baby’s bottom, cucumbers really get the job done. They are loaded with vitamin C and beta-carotene, which as you may know are common in beauty products! Vitamin C helps with the production of collagen which keeps away the wrinkles and we definitely don’t want those. It also helps to reduce the appearance of age spots. (Dang you harsh sunrays!) Beta-carotene also helps with age spots and enhances the color and texture of skin. If that’s not something to brag about, then I don’t know what is.

Hydration & the Hangover

Cucumbers naturally have a high-water content, so they made me feel more
hydrated. After a night out over-indulging with my girlfriends (I never said I was perfect), I would turn to my trusty cucumber as a morning snack. Believe it or not, I would feel ten times better. A 90% water content combined with their ability to eliminate toxins, cucumbers are literally a hangover’s worst nightmare. I turn to them every time.

Not only do they act as an alternative to Gatorade, they can help lower your doctor bills too!

Seriously Packed with Nutrients

Cucumbers are loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, flavonoids, lignans, and triterpenes. All of these elements are extremely beneficial to your health and your body will thank you for it. Triterpenes, aka phytonutrients, contain a compound called cucurbitacins. Researchers have concluded that cucurbitacins block the development of cancer cells. Not only do cucumbers have these cancer-fighting properties, they also aid in heartburn. This magical vegetable literally has a “cooling” effect on the body. The anti-inflammatory benefits of a cucumber can bring your stomach’s acid production to a halt. Believe me, I know. Acid becomes excessive when a bad, sugary/starchy diet is at play. This is not good. An acidic body is an unhealthy body and you don’t want that. So when you start feeling that burning sensation in your stomach, pop a slice of this in your mouth and you will be crying tears of happiness.

As you can see, cucumbers are the best. You can slip a few slices in your glass or in a pitcher of water for an easy way to work them into your day or try sprinkling them with some salt for a tasty snack. And remember… when life hands you cucumbers, make detox water!
