If you are like most Americans, you spend more time at work than you do at home, which can lead to a struggle in work-life balance. Fear not, for there are ways to stay healthy in the office.

There’s a reason they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast provides you with the energy and nutrients that lead to increased concentration. Plus, breakfast can also keep you from packing on the pounds. Many studies have show that breakfast eaters tend to weigh less than breakfast skippers because people who eat breakfast tend to eat less throughout the day.

  1. Swap the coffee out with fruit or a vitamin rich juice

Coffee in the morning sounds all well and good until you are addicted to caffeine and feeling the side effects. Instead of going for the morning joe, try a cup of orange juice. Orange juice is effective in stimulating the brain because unlike of caffeine; it has flavonoids. Flavonoids improve blood flow to your brain, boosting your alertness and concentration, with the added bonus of no afternoon crash.

  1. Zen out your desk

If you have to spend 40 hours a week at your desk, you should make it as comfortable and calming as possible. First, clean up your desk and eliminate all the clutter. Next, decorate it to your liking. Print out some pictures of family and friends. Get a white board and write inspirational quotes to keep you going when motivation is low. Bring in a plant, oils, or any other items that can aid in stress relief. Turn your desk into your happy place!

  1. Have a wellness drawer

Designate a drawer in your desk as your “wellness drawer.” This is a sacred drawer full of daily goodies. Fill it with healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, teas, and whatever else your heart desires. Whenever you are having a moment or are just looking for a natural boost, turn to your trusty wellness drawer.

We are supposed to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, so why not get your daily dose as your are sitting at your desk all day. Water is like a magic potion; it has so many health benefits it doesn’t even seem believable. It’s a brain-boosting, fatigue-busting, hangover-helping, sickness-fighting,  skin-clearing natural elixir! Water also helps with fluid balance, calorie control, muscle fuel,  kidney function, pain prevention, and much more. Drink up!

Ordering out your lunch is not only hard on your wallet but also hard on your health. We all know the feeling of fullness that occurs after we eat a heavy lunch. We get back to our desks and then feel like we need a long nap. Packing a healthy lunch can solve all of the above problems. You will feel better and have more energy throughout the second half of your day, which is a true win/win.

  1. Take a post-lunch stroll

Medical experts have found that if you take 100 steps after you eat a meal, you will notice a big improvement in your overall well-being. To be exact, it can aid in lowering your blood sugar, bringing down your triglycerides, speeding up digestion, burning calories, and aid in weight loss. Not to mention it can clear your mind and improve your mood to get away from the ol’ desk for a few minutes. Added bonus, you can get your daily dose of vitamin D.

Stretching while at work can reduce muscle-related discomfort and musculoskeletal disorders that come along with sitting at a computer for hours at a time. That is where office yoga comes in! There are a couple of poses that you can do right from the comfort of your office chair. Seated backbends, shoulder and wrist openers, and seated twists are all possible during the work day. It is good to take a break every once in a while, and yoga is the perfect break since it forces you to relax and focus on your breath.

  1. Tune into calming music

Music has the ability to quickly shift our mood, affecting our subconscious mind where those troublesome negative thoughts feed on our fears and fuel the fires of stress. Listening to classical music while performing mental tasks can significantly lower systolic blood pressure. So if you are ever feeling stressed at work, calming classical music is your remedy.

  1. Disinfect your work area

So wipe down your area and your electronics every few days, maybe even every day during flu season or if there is a sick coworker around. And always remember to wash your hands frequently to keep the office germs from getting into your system.

With these tips, you will be healthier and happier in the office, which will then translate to more happiness in every aspect of your life!
