Is it just us, or do gloomy people seem to get sick more than happy people? Turns out that happiness tracks with good health. According to the classic study done by psychology professor Sheldon Cohen at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, students who scored highest on a “happiness’ scale were far less likely to catch a cold. The study looked at 300 health students, checked out their happiness score, then exposed them to an infectious virus. Those who were the least happy had three times the chance of becoming infected with the virus than those who were the most happy. So, do whatever it takes to be happy – do something good for someone else, get more exercise, watch a funny movie, hang out with friends you enjoy – and you’ll be less likely to come down with the flu.
