Aside from its obvious tooth-decaying effects, sugar is also linked to many other health issues. We’ve put together five reasons to consider unfriending the devil in disguise.

Who knew sugar was the cause of facial wrinkles? In a process called glycation, sugar attaches to collagen in our skin as well as other parts of the body. This process causes inflammation and reduces effectiveness of both collagen and elastin, which are the proteins in our skin that help it remain youthful. When these don’t work well, the skin begins to look dull and dry.

Aside from aging the skin, too much sugar has also been found to aggravate acne and, in some cases, trigger it. Further, the Rosacea Research & Development Institute reported that consuming sugar when suffering from rosacea is like adding some very combustible fuel to an already burning fire.

Sugar consumption may be one of the leading factors to headaches, but it is one we can control. Eating foods high in sugar like cookies, candy, or cake, causes your blood sugar to rise rapidly, then shoot back down again. This fluctuation causes headaches for some. After giving up refined sugar, your blood sugar will remain stable, preventing those daily head pounds.

Dr. John Douillard reported that the second most common cause of insomnia is related to blood sugar issues that affect one-third of Americans. Eliminating sugar from your dinner diet will avoid the rise in blood sugar levels that keep you up all night. You’ll also avoid the subsequent drop that occurs after every rise. While stimulating the brain, this drop also causes the body to release hormones to regular glucose level, which can easily keep you awake. If you absolutely cannot pass up a late night snack, munch on oatmeal or whole grain carbs. These snacks maintain the blood sugar levels, ultimately promoting a healthy and consistent slumber. By removing the pattern of rising and falling blood sugar levels, you’ll sleep like a baby.

Ditching foods high in sugar will speed up the weight loss process, particularly in the belly and love handles area. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association has shown that those on a low sugar and refined carb diet burned 325 more calories a day than those eating a low-fat diet. The study also concluded that diets high in sugar contribute to weight gain and obesity. Too many sugary foods over a period of time cause resistance to the hormone insulin, which helps keep our blood sugar levels from getting too high or too low. This resistance prompts our bodies to store fat and slows down our metabolism. So the best cure to losing our love handles is to lessen sugar intake.

The sugar rush you get after eating a tub of ice cream may help you stay alert for a few minutes, but your energy level will quickly follow the drop of your blood sugar level. For a quick energy boost, stick to natural sources like fruits and veggies instead – whatever happened to good ol’ apples and peanut butter? With these alternatives, your blood sugar levels will stay consistent, so you can complete your nightly workout and still have energy to make dinner.
