British Woman Ignites Social Media with Before and After Images
Posted On Apr 13, 2016
A 22-year old British woman has taken a stand against the stigma and stereotypes associated with mental health. In a bold move, Amber Smith posted two photos on Facebook that both captured very different appearances. The first showcased Smith smiling, full of light, and dolled up whereas the second image that was posted showed her in a very different light, visibly shaken. Accompanying the unmade second photo was the caption, “’normal’ side to me that most people don’t see.”
She further continued by stating, “I’m so sick of the fact that it’s 2016 and there is still so much stigma around mental health. It disgusts me that so many people are so uneducated and judgmental over the topic.”
Since the age of 16, Smith has been dealing with depression and anxiety but had only been diagnosed three years ago. Her boldness to touch on an issue that is often silenced in today’s society has ignited a social media phenom. Many people have followed suit by posting before and after selfies of themselves with one photo showing them in a happier place, vibrant, energetic, and all smiles. Followed up with another photo that truly captures a disheveled appearance of themselves in what many would consider being in a not-so-good space.
I appreciate Amber Smiths courageousness to tackle an issue such as mental health head on. Her transparency and encouraging words have sparked an informative conversation within the millennial generation. Smith says, “The more awareness there is, the less people who will suffer in silence.”
This brings me to the old saying that holds undeniable truth, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”
